TV-Series
Description
Shigure Soma, cursed as the Dog of the Chinese Zodiac, transforms into his animal form when hugged by the opposite sex or under stress. A member of the Sohma family, he appears between 26 and 28 years old during the series and stands 178 cm tall. Outwardly laid-back and mischievous, he cloaks a calculating, manipulative mind behind humor and a carefree demeanor. His obsession with Akito Sohma, the family’s "God" and childhood love, fuels his desire to dismantle the zodiac curse. He believes freeing Akito from her role will allow him to claim her completely, rationalizing deceit and cruelty as necessary sacrifices for this goal.

Raised in the Sohma family’s oppressive environment, Shigure endured neglectful parents who prioritized reputation over emotional bonds. He retreated into literature and emotional detachment, strategies that let him observe others while guarding his vulnerabilities. His closest relationships—with Hatori and Ayame Sohma, forming the "Mabudachi Trio"—mix loyalty with friction, balancing mutual reliance and occasional clashes.

Akito remains the focal point of his life. Their volatile dynamic intertwines Shigure’s devotion with mutual toxicity, exemplified by his decision to sleep with Akito’s mother, Ren, as retaliation for her abuse. He deliberately provokes Akito’s anger to push her toward self-awareness, refusing to indulge her destructive behavior like other zodiac members. Strategically, he manipulates events to erode her control, nudging younger Sohmas like Yuki and Kyo to forge independence outside the family.

When Tohru Honda enters his home, her empathy begins altering his trajectory. Though initially exploiting her presence to destabilize the curse, he grows unexpectedly protective—attending her school meetings, offering emotional support, and delaying harsh revelations to shield her. Guilt over his manipulations surfaces, prompting rare self-reflection. He admits to being "the dirtiest one of all," acknowledging his flaws while slowly balancing his ambitions with concern for others.

In *Fruits Basket Another*, Shigure marries Akito and fathers Shiki Sohma. As a parent, he maintains his teasing wit but fosters Shiki’s resilience, urging him to learn from mistakes and cultivate self-confidence. Shiki deems him paradoxically unreliable yet dependable—a reflection of Shigure’s matured ability to blend roguish charm with genuine responsibility.

Shigure embodies contradictions: a schemer shaped by trauma, capable of cruelty yet yearning for connection. His journey evolves from self-serving plots to measured empathy, spurred by Tohru’s influence and the repercussions of his choices. While retaining his cunning, he ultimately aids in dismantling the Sohma family’s cycles of abuse, playing a pivotal role in dissolving the zodiac curse.
