Description
Kagura serves as the main female protagonist within the Yorozuya freelance group. She belongs to the Yato tribe, an extraterrestrial race renowned for extreme physical prowess and bloodthirsty tendencies, though she consciously rejects this violent legacy. Her family consists of her father Umibouzu (a legendary alien hunter), her deceased mother Kouka, and her older brother Kamui.
During her impoverished childhood on Rakuyou, Kamui acted as her protector until a violent conflict erupted between him and Umibouzu, resulting in Umibouzu losing an arm. To protect his family, Umibouzu distanced himself, leaving Kagura to care for her terminally ill mother alone. After Kouka's death, Kagura traveled to Earth seeking independence. She initially joined an Edo gang but fled when ordered to kill, leading to her encounter with Gintoki Sakata and Shinpachi Shimura when they accidentally ran her over. She subsequently joined their odd-jobs business, Yorozuya.
Kagura possesses vermilion hair tied in twin buns, blue eyes, and fair skin. She typically wears a red cheongsam with yellow accents and constantly carries a purple parasol to shield her Yato-sensitive skin from sunlight; this parasol doubles as a weapon capable of deflecting projectiles and firing bullets. Post-timeskip at age 16, she grows taller (170 cm), wears her hair longer with clips, and dons a modified cheongsam revealing her midriff. A gender-swapped version appeared during the Dekoboko Arc, featuring long slicked-back hair, a beard, and Chinese armor.
Her personality blends naivety with a sharp tongue and blunt speech, often ending sentences with "-aru." She exhibits violent tendencies to resolve conflicts despite claiming to dislike violence, and engages in unladylike behavior such as nose-picking or vomiting. She harbors an obsession with large breasts and displays strong maternal instincts. Beneath her abrasive exterior, she craves affection and demonstrates fierce loyalty, particularly to Yorozuya. She possesses an immense appetite, favoring plain foods like rice, eggs, and pickled seaweed (sukonbu).
Kagura's Yato heritage grants physical abilities far surpassing humans: she can stop speeding vehicles with one hand, intercept bullets with her teeth or hands, and heal rapidly from injuries. Her strength is instinctive but initially poorly controlled, resulting in accidental pet fatalities. When emotionally triggered by threats to loved ones, she enters a feral "Yato mode," gaining overwhelming power at the cost of rationality and self-control. This state manifested during battles like the Yoshiwara Blaze arc against Abuto, requiring Shinpachi's intervention. Post-timeskip, she trains to manipulate her aging and masters qi manipulation under Kamui's guidance, potentially extending her lifespan.
Her relationships are complex:
- **Umibouzu**: She mocks his baldness ("Hage") but shares a dream of becoming elite alien hunters together once she matures.
- **Kamui**: Initially hostile due to his abandonment and violence, their dynamic evolves through mutual rescue during the Rakuyou and Silver Soul arcs. Kagura ultimately helps him reconcile with their shared trauma, and he teaches her qi manipulation post-timeskip.
- **Yorozuya**: She views Gintoki as a father figure and role model, imitating his habits despite frequent squabbles. With Shinpachi, she maintains a sibling-like bond marked by physical quarrels but deep mutual care.
- **Others**: She respects Tsukuyo (nicknaming her "Tsukky") and fears Otae Shimura. She rivals Sougo Okita in competitiveness.
Kagura's development centers on accepting her Yato heritage while defining her identity. Early arcs show her suppressing instincts to live as a "normal Earth girl," but pivotal moments—like confronting Kamui in Rakuyou and protecting Edo in the Silver Soul arc—compel her to harness her powers responsibly. By the series' conclusion, she achieves balance: embracing her lineage without succumbing to its bloodlust, solidifying Earth as her chosen home alongside her found family.
