Description
Kagura is a young alien girl and a central member of the Yorozuya, a odd-jobs business in Edo. She belongs to the Yato Clan, a race of Amanto known throughout the universe for their terrifying strength and bloodthirsty nature. Her heritage gives her translucent, fair skin that is highly sensitive to sunlight, which is why she is almost always seen carrying a purple parasol. This umbrella is not just for protection but also serves as her primary weapon, as it is bulletproof and can fire a barrage of projectiles from its tip.

Born as the second child of Umibouzu, the galaxy's most powerful monster hunter, and Kouka, Kagura grew up on the Yato homeworld. Her childhood was marked by tragedy; her older brother, Kamui, attempted to kill their father in accordance with a violent Yato tradition, leading to Umibouzu losing an arm and eventually leaving home to protect his family from his own berserk strength. After her mother passed away from illness, Kagura decided to leave her home planet to earn money and, more importantly, to escape the violent instincts of her lineage.

Initially naive, she was tricked into working for a gang of hoodlums who exploited her strength. She fled when ordered to kill someone and soon after met Sakata Gintoki and Shinpachi Shimura. After they helped her leave the gang, she essentially forced Gintoki to hire her, becoming the second member of the Yorozuya. Her personality is a striking contrast of innocence and ferocity. She is often cheerful, blunt, and openly admits to having a sharp tongue. She has picked up many of Gintoki's unrefined habits, such as picking her nose and making lewd jokes, leading Shinpachi to often call her a "mini-Gintoki". Despite her tough exterior, she is deeply caring and has a strong desire to be a normal girl, rejecting the Yato legacy of mindless battle.

Kagura's core motivation is to live by her own will rather than being controlled by her bloodline. She strives to use her immense power to protect her new family and friends, fighting against the instinct to simply destroy. Her role in the story is that of the Yorozuya's powerhouse, providing overwhelming physical force in combat and comedic relief through her insatiable appetite and frequent, violent quarrels with colleagues like Shinpachi and Shinsengumi captain Okita Sougo, whom she calls "Super Sadist".

Her most defining relationship is with Gintoki, whom she affectionately calls "Gin-chan." Their dynamic is a mix of father-daughter and older brother-younger sister, as he provides direction and a moral code for her, while she imitates him and is fiercely protective of him. Shinpachi is like a bickering but beloved brother to her, and her fury at seeing him gravely injured has been a trigger for her to unleash her dormant Yato instincts. Her family relationships are complex; she calls her father "Papi" but also "Hage" (baldy), and shares a tense but deep bond with her brother Kamui, who she calls "Baka-Aniki" (stupid older brother). While she hates him for abandoning their family, she ultimately seeks to save him from his destructive path.

Throughout the series, Kagura shows significant development. Initially running from her heritage, she is forced to confront it directly. In the Yoshiwara in Flames arc, when Shinpachi is nearly killed, she enters a dangerous "awakened" or berserker state, tapping into the full, savage potential of her Yato blood. She loses control and becomes a monster bent only on killing, nearly murdering her opponent Abuto before Shinpachi's voice brings her back. This event solidifies her resolve to control her power rather than be ruled by it. Over time, she physically matures as well, with a noticeable growth spurt in later chapters that makes her taller than Shinpachi, and her hairstyle becomes longer.

Notable abilities stemming from her Yato biology include superhuman strength, allowing her to stop a moving scooter with one hand or hurl massive boulders, and accelerated healing, which enables her to recover from gunshot wounds in moments. She is an expert hand-to-hand combatant, though her fighting style is raw and instinctual rather than formal. Her signature parasol serves as a firearm, shield, and bludgeon, and her immense appetite fuels her stamina and power. When her emotions are pushed to their limit, she can access a Yato Mode, surrendering to her killer instincts for a massive, uncontrollable boost in power.
