Description
Miyuki Shirogane, student council president at Shuchi'in Academy, initially engages in strategic battles to secure a romantic confession from vice president Kaguya Shinomiya. He believes confessing first would signify weakness and undermine his perceived equality. His childhood involved financial hardship after his mother's abandonment, profoundly shaping his insecurities and work ethic. She took his younger sister Kei, who later returned to Miyuki and their father. Following his father's unemployment after a factory closure, Miyuki took multiple part-time jobs to support the household. They lived modestly before moving to a larger home due to his father's success as a YouTube content creator.

Miyuki compensates for perceived lack of innate talent through extreme diligence, studying relentlessly to maintain his position as the academy's top student and rank second nationally in mock exams. He sleeps only three hours on weekdays, relying heavily on caffeine, developing chronic eye bags that contribute to an intimidating glare. This inadvertently attracts Kaguya, who associates it with his focus. His academic drive stems from deep-seated fear of inadequacy regarding Kaguya's wealth and status; he believes falling behind academically would render him unworthy of her affection. Handwritten motivational slogans above his study desk include "Become an equal to Kaguya Shinomiya" and "Defeat Mikado Shijo absolutely," referencing his academic rival.

Despite outward confidence, Miyuki harbors deficiencies. He is athletically inept, initially incapable of serving a volleyball without hitting himself, and suffers entomophobia, fainting when confronted by insects like cockroaches. He is tone-deaf, his singing described as resembling "sea cucumber intestines," and struggles with dancing, balloon art, improvisation, swimming, and fashion. He undergoes rigorous training, often guided by secretary Chika Fujiwara, achieving moderate success in activities like volleyball and rap. Conversely, he excels in juggling, spinning tops, yo-yo, and possesses a natural aptitude for art.

Acceptance to Stanford University intensifies his character development, creating a deadline to resolve his relationship with Kaguya, as her family obligations prevent her from leaving Japan. During the cultural festival, he orchestrates an elaborate ruse as the phantom thief "Arsène" to lure Kaguya to the clock tower, where he confesses. This marks a turning point, transitioning their dynamic from rivalry to a couple navigating new challenges. Post-confession, he gradually sheds his perfectionist facade, revealing vulnerabilities like his fear that others only value his idealized self. He becomes more open about his working-class roots and familial struggles, including lingering trauma from maternal abandonment that fueled his belief he must constantly prove his worth to be loved.

Miyuki demonstrates unwavering kindness and respect in relationships. He covertly slips money to his sister Kei for birthdays despite their family's no-gift agreement, driven by concern for her well-being. Though overprotective, he genuinely prioritizes her autonomy. His love for Kaguya manifests in selfless actions, resisting temptation when she is vulnerable with fever and halting intimate moments if she appears uneasy. He supports peers like Miko Iino during stage fright and offers dating advice despite inexperience, though his guidance is often comically misguided. His affinity for penguins and cats is reflected in his sleeping habits, embracing a penguin plushie that causes his signature bedhead.

Holding diverse certifications—including Eiken Pre-1 English proficiency, Kanji Kentei Level 2, hazardous materials handling, and chick sexing—Miyuki dreams of becoming an astronomer, inspired by stargazing and folk tales. He references the Kaguya-hime legend, asserting he would have stolen the princess back, mirroring his resolve to protect Kaguya from her family's control. His journey culminates in fostering mutual acceptance with Kaguya, acknowledging their love transcends power dynamics and pride.
