Description
Brook is a major character from the Japanese manga and anime series One Piece. He is the musician of the Straw Hat Pirates and the eighth member to join Monkey D. Luffy's crew, serving as the group's skilled composer and swordsman. Brook is instantly recognizable by his appearance: a tall, living skeleton dressed in formal attire, complete with a top hat and an impressive afro. Despite having no skin, muscles, or organs, he retains all his human senses, can eat, drink, cry, and even produce nosebleeds. This extraordinary existence is the result of eating the Yomi Yomi no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit also known as the Revive-Revive Fruit.

Brook's past is central to his character. Born in West Blue, he originally served as the leader of a battle convoy for an unnamed kingdom before becoming a pirate. He joined the Rumbar Pirates as their swordsman and musician, and after the captain fell ill, Brook became the crew's代理 captain. Fifty-two years before the current storyline, the Rumbar Pirates made a solemn promise to their beloved whale companion, Laboon, that they would return to Reverse Mountain's Twin Cape after circumnavigating the globe. However, the crew met a tragic end in the Florian Triangle when they were attacked by pirates wielding poisoned weapons. As they had no doctor, the entire crew perished. Brook, being the last to die, ate his Devil Fruit before his death, allowing his soul to return from the afterlife. Unfortunately, due to the thick fog of the Florian Triangle, his soul became lost for an entire year, and by the time it found his body, it had decayed to nothing but bones. The only part of his flesh to survive was his afro, which he humorously attributes to having strong roots.

Personality-wise, Brook is eccentric, polite, and incredibly loyal, but he is also known for his terrible manners and comedic perversion. He frequently asks any woman he meets, regardless of the situation, to show him her panties, a gag that often results in him being physically beaten. Despite his advanced age of around 90 years old, he is childlike and playful, often joining Luffy and Usopp in their antics. His unique laugh is "Yohohoho," which he often adds to skeleton-themed jokes about his own condition, such as saying he has "no stomach to be hungry" or that a broken bone makes him "bone-tired". While he is cheerful and optimistic on the surface, this demeanor masks a profound sense of loneliness and grief from losing his entire crew and spending five decades in isolation on the ghost ship. He is deeply committed to his promise to Laboon, and his primary motivation for joining the Straw Hat Pirates is to fulfill that vow and finally reunite with the whale.

In combat, Brook is a formidable swordsman who wields a cane sword, a blade concealed within a walking stick. His fighting style is distinct from Roronoa Zoro's; while Zoro uses heavy, slashing attacks, Brook specializes in rapid, precise thrusting techniques reminiscent of fencing. His attack names are derived from musical terms. After the two-year timeskip, he upgrades his weapon to the Soul Solid, a blade crafted by the Longarm Tribe that can channel the chill of the underworld. His mastery of the Yomi Yomi no Mi has expanded beyond simple resurrection. He can project his soul out of his body to become intangible for scouting and espionage. Furthermore, he can infuse his sword with the frost of the afterlife, freezing his targets upon contact. He also uses his music offensively, playing melodies that can induce sleep or create auditory hallucinations, captivating his opponents.

Brook's relationships within the crew are varied. He shares a mutual respect with Zoro as the two swordsmen of the group, and Zoro was the one who defeated the zombie general holding Brook's shadow. He has a close, if antagonistic, bond with Nami, whom he constantly annoys with his requests to see her underwear, though he secretly holds a deep trust in her. He also shares a camaraderie with Sanji, bonding over their shared appreciation for beautiful women, but Brook lacks Sanji's chivalric code and will attack a female enemy without hesitation. He is often found alongside Usopp and Chopper in moments of fear, despite his own combat prowess. He views Luffy with absolute loyalty and knight-like devotion, rarely questioning his captain's orders and believing wholeheartedly in his dream to become the Pirate King.

Throughout the story, Brook has shown significant development. He evolves from a lonely, cursed soul trapped in the past to a vital and cherished member of the Straw Hat family. During the Whole Cake Island arc, he demonstrated immense bravery and strategic importance, successfully infiltrating Big Mom's territory, retrieving important poneglyph rubbings, and facing the Emperor herself. His ability to withstand her power, as his soul had already faced death, was a pivotal moment. He has also grown from a relatively unknown pirate to the "Soul King," a world-famous rock star, after his two years of training in the music industry. Despite his new fame, his greatest desire remains simple: to play the song Binks' Sake for Laboon once more, the very song his dying crew played fifty years ago.
