Description
Dracule Mihawk, known by the epithet Hawk Eyes, is a world-famous pirate recognized as the World's Strongest Swordsman. He formerly held a position as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, a group of government-sanctioned pirates, until the system was abolished. Following this, he became a founding executive of the Cross Guild, an organization that places bounties on Marines, alongside his former Warlord colleague, Crocodile.
Physically, Mihawk is a tall and lean man with short black hair, a short beard, and distinctive yellow eyes with pupils that resemble a hawk's, which is the source of his nickname. He typically wears ornate, wine-colored clothing, a black coat, and a wide-brimmed black hat adorned with a white feather. Always present is a small, cross-shaped knife that hangs from his neck, which also serves as a concealed dagger. His primary weapon is the massive black blade strapped to his back, a sword named Yoru, which is one of the twelve Supreme Grade blades and is considered the world's strongest black sword.
In personality, Mihawk is stoic, serious, and intensely solitary. He rarely displays emotion, maintaining a calm and collected demeanor even on the battlefield. He is a lone wolf who has spent much of his life dedicated to mastering the sword, and he prefers to live a quiet and peaceful life, often spending his days at his castle on Kuraigana Island tending to his farm, cooking, and reading the newspaper. Despite his fearsome reputation and status as the strongest, he is not depicted as cruel or particularly ambitious; his primary motivation is to find a swordsman who can surpass his former rival, Red-Haired Shanks, or challenge him in a meaningful duel. He is known to be selective about his battles, sometimes using only his small cross knife against opponents he deems unworthy, as a form of mockery or to give them a fighting chance.
Mihawk's role in the story is intrinsically tied to several key characters and events. He first appeared in the East Blue, having single-handedly destroyed a large pirate fleet just to pass the time. There, he was challenged by Roronoa Zoro, the swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates. Recognizing Zoro's unwavering will and ambition, Mihawk defeated him not with his great sword but with his small cross knife, showing the vast gap in their abilities. Instead of killing Zoro, Mihawk encouraged him to surpass him one day, making him the target of Zoro's lifelong dream. Later, during the Summit War of Marineford, Mihawk attended the government's summons to fight against the Whitebeard Pirates. He notably tested the distance between himself and Whitebeard and targeted Luffy, showing both his analytical nature and curiosity about the individuals who possess great potential. On the rare occasion his old friend Shanks appeared to end the war, Mihawk withdrew, stating that fighting him was not part of his agreement with the government. After the war, he returned to his island to find Zoro, who had been sent there, and initially dismissed him. However, when Zoro lowered himself to beg for training to become stronger for his captain, Mihawk agreed, becoming his mentor for the two-year timeskip.
Mihawk's key relationships are few but significant. His foremost relationship is as a rival and friend to Shanks, one of the Four Emperors. In the past, their duels were legendary, but Mihawk lost interest in fighting Shanks after he lost his arm, though they maintain a neutral and somewhat friendly rapport. His most impactful relationship is with Zoro, whom he views as a future great swordsman. He respects Zoro's dedication enough to train him, even though the goal is for Zoro to eventually defeat him. He also shares a prolonged cohabitation with Perona, a former antagonist, who stayed at his castle during and after the timeskip. Though he can be dismissive of her, he showed concern for her safety when he anticipated the disbandment of the Warlords.
Regarding his development, Mihawk has remained a pinnacle of strength, but his status and affiliations have changed. He progressed from a lone wanderer to a Warlord, and after the system was dismantled, he partnered with Crocodile to create the Cross Guild. While he and Crocodile are the true founders and powerhouses of the organization, they use the clown-like pirate Buggy as a public figurehead to distract the Marines, allowing Mihawk to live more peacefully. This reflects his unchanging core motivation: to be left alone while safeguarding his position and seeking a worthy challenge.
Mihawk's notable abilities are unparalleled within the world of swordsmanship. He is a master of both the "strong blade" style, capable of releasing massive and powerful flying slashes that can cleave entire ships and icebergs from great distances, and the "gentle blade" style, with which he can subtly deflect the path of bullets. He is also a proficient user of both Armament and Observation Haki, further enhancing his offensive power and perceptual abilities. His immense skill and power are reflected in his enormous bounty, which stands at 3,590,000,000 berries, making it one of the highest known in the world.
