Description
Roswaal L. Mathers, Margrave and head of House Mathers in Lugunica, cuts a distinctive figure. Tall and slender at 186 centimeters, his pale skin contrasts sharply with indigo hair and heterochromatic eyes—yellow left, blue right. His elaborate clown-like makeup features light-lavender powder, purple lipstick, and asymmetrical eyeshadow, often paired with flamboyant jester attire.

He is the original Roswaal A. Mathers, born over four centuries ago. Plagued by uncontrolled magic as a youth, he found salvation under the Witch of Greed, Echidna, who became his mentor. Her resolution of his afflictions and magical tutelage ignited an intense devotion. Following her death in the Great Calamity, reviving Echidna became his singular purpose, driving all subsequent actions. He achieves longevity through a soul-transcription technique, transferring his consciousness into descendant bodies.

His personality blends genuine care for close associates—especially the twin maids Rem and Ram—with aloofness. Yet, his obsession with Echidna's revival consistently supersedes this care, leading him to manipulate events and sacrifice allies. He orchestrated the Witch Cult's attack on Rem and Ram's village, rescuing only the sisters to bind them via a magical pact with the oni Kaji, ensuring service until "the white meets the dark." Later, he hired assassin Elsa Granhiert to steal Emilia's insignia, intending to exploit Subaru Natsuki's "Return by Death" ability.

As the kingdom's strongest combat mage, Roswaal wields mastery over all six elemental magics (fire, water, wind, earth, yin, yang) granted by his Divine Protection of Sorcery. He supplements this with martial skills learned from a western ninja and the unique ability to rewrite spell compositions mid-cast. Preferring long-range attacks and tactical superiority, he acknowledges limitations against specialized foes like Divine General Balleroy Temeglyph, whose aerial mobility and precision surpass his own in open combat.

Governing the Mathers Domain—encompassing Costuul, Arlam Village, and the Sanctuary—he sponsors Emilia's Royal Selection candidacy solely to obtain the dragon Volcanica's blood, believing it essential to break the seal on Echidna's soul within her tomb. His centuries-spanning schemes are guided by a Gospel tome received from Echidna. He founded institutions like the Royal Magic Research Institute to advance magical knowledge, indirectly serving his goals.

Key historical events include a battle 400 years ago against the Warlock of Melancholy, Hector, which crippled his original body; establishing long-term contracts with allies like Clind to protect his assets; pursuing the incomplete Witch vessel Sphinx during the Demi-Human War while inhabiting the female Roswaal J. Mathers body, culminating in Sphinx's apparent death at Lugunica Castle; and orchestrating the Sanctuary crisis to force Subaru to use "Return by Death" for Emilia's protection, believing this path leads to Echidna's revival.

His influence extends to Emilia Camp members, including Beatrice, whom he introduced to successive family heads. Despite his manipulations, fleeting loneliness and unresolved longing tied to his magic surface, observable only by close associates like Ram.
