Description
Jibanyan is a red-and-white feline Yo-kai of the Charming tribe. Originally a house cat named Rudy belonging to a girl named Amy, his fatal encounter with a truck at an intersection transformed him into a Yo-kai. In his final moments, Rudy misinterpreted Amy's distress as disappointment in his weakness, compelling him to linger as Jibanyan. He relentlessly battles trucks to prove his strength and earn Amy's redemption.
His personality mixes fierce determination against trucks or troublesome Yo-kai with stereotypical feline laziness and uncooperativeness, especially towards tasks he considers unimportant. Jibanyan obsesses over chocolate bars ("Chocobars") and the idol group Next HarMEOWny, amassing extensive merchandise like magazines and clothing, and dreams of owning a Chocobar factory. He stores these items within his yellow haramaki belly warmer. Physically, he has pink inner ears, a chipped left ear, yellow eyes with large pupils, two tails tipped with aquamarine-hitodama flames, and an aquamarine bell on his collar.
In combat, Jibanyan primarily attacks with his paws, executing his signature Soultimate Move "Paws of Fury" – a rapid punching assault inspired by Fist of the North Star's "Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken". While incapable of natural evolution, he achieves transformed states through fusion: merging with Roughraff creates the rebellious Baddinyan, fusion with Coughkoff results in the spiky, sickly Thornyan, and contact with Whisper produces Buchinyan. The Yo-kai Watch Model Zero unlocks three additional comedy-themed Soultimate Moves: Nyaight, Nyext, and Victory, purportedly inherited from his lineage.
His narrative spans continuities. He first meets protagonist Nate Adams during a truck fight at an intersection. After Nate recovers a stolen photo of Amy and reassures Jibanyan of his courage, the Yo-kai gifts Nate his medal, forging their partnership. This bond persists across games, with Jibanyan residing at Nate's home and assisting with Yo-kai incidents. In the anime reboot *Yo-kai Watch!*, Jibanyan helps restore Nate's erased memories of Yo-kai and partners with him using the Elda Model K Watch and Yo-kai Keystones. A distant future depicts him rebuilt as the robotic Robonyan.
His design underwent significant revisions. Early concepts portrayed him taller and more menacing before adjustments emphasized cuter features. Prototype designs included accessories like bandannas, sling pouches, or rope belts with seals, elements partially incorporated into his final abilities or movie appearances.
Jibanyan appears ubiquitously across the franchise. He is playable in every mainline video game (*Yo-kai Watch*, *Yo-kai Watch 2*, *Yo-kai Watch 3*, *Yo-kai Watch 4*) and numerous spin-offs like *Yo-kai Watch Blasters*, *Yo-kai Sangokushi* (where he embodies Liu Bei), and *Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble*. He features prominently in all anime iterations, manga adaptations, and films. His cultural impact extends through merchandise, themed attractions, and collaborations with McDonald's Japan and the Hawaii Tourism Board, where he served as a "Kids Friendship Ambassador".
