Description
Ginko is a wandering specialist investigating supernatural life forms called mushi. He bears distinctive white hair, pale skin, and a green right eye—physical changes resulting from a childhood encounter with a mushi swarm. Before this event, he had black hair, darker eyes, and tanned skin. His typical attire features modern-style clothing such as button-up shirts, slacks, coats, and sweaters, contrasting with the historical setting due to the series' original contemporary concept.

Orphaned as a youth when a landslide killed his mother and injured his leg, he was taken in and trained by Nui, a female mushi master who shared his eventual philosophy; he was then known as Yoki. His physical transformation occurred when a mushi called "Ginko" engulfed him, costing his right eye, his memories, and altering his pigmentation. He adopted the name "Ginko" from the only detail he recalled—the mushi responsible.

He later studied under another mushi master, Suguro. A near-fatal experience during this apprenticeship clarified his purpose in maintaining balance between humans and mushi, though an intervention violating natural order caused his permanent exile from Suguro's mountain.

Ginko bears the rare trait "youshitsu," enabling him to perceive mushi invisible to most humans. This ability carries a significant drawback: his presence actively attracts mushi. To mitigate this, he lives nomadically, avoiding prolonged stays anywhere to prevent dangerous mushi accumulations. He constantly smokes a special insect-repelling tobacco derived from "Mushi Soot Grass" as a deterrent.

His personality balances a generally calm, observant demeanor with focused seriousness when confronting mushi threats. He approaches cases analytically, prioritizing understanding over judgment, and consistently states that mushi are neither good nor evil but simply exist within nature. While maintaining professional detachment akin to a physician, he demonstrates deep empathy for both humans and mushi, often risking his safety to aid others. He exhibits dry humor, particularly around acquaintances like the doctor Adashino, and shows introspection regarding past decisions.

His transient life precludes lasting relationships or a permanent home. Though implied to develop feelings for a woman named Suzu during one winter, his obligation to move on supersedes personal connections; he acknowledges this limitation to her brother, Miharu, indicating his inability to return during vulnerable seasons.

His professional ethos centers on mediating conflicts from human-mushi interactions. He intervenes only when necessary to restore equilibrium, respecting boundaries between the natural and human worlds. His methods prioritize observation, knowledge application, and minimal disruption, guided by the principle of preserving natural harmony.
