Description
Izuku Midoriya was born without a Quirk in a superhuman society, enduring childhood bullying led by Katsuki Bakugō, who mockingly called him "Deku" to highlight his perceived uselessness. Despite this, he clung to his lifelong dream of becoming a hero, inspired by the Symbol of Peace, All Might. His innate heroism emerged when he instinctively rushed to save Bakugō from a villain, impressing All Might. Recognizing Izuku's potential, All Might selected him as the successor for his transferable Quirk, One For All, subjecting him to ten months of rigorous physical training to prepare his body. After consuming a strand of All Might's hair, Izuku inherited One For All and gained admission to U.A. High School's Class 1-A.
Izuku possesses messy dark-green hair, large green eyes, and four symmetrical freckles on each cheek. Initially skinny, he developed a lean, muscular build through training. His right arm and hand bear significant scarring and deformation from repeatedly overusing his Quirk in battles against opponents like Shoto Todoroki and Muscular. His hero costume, originally a green jumpsuit designed by his mother featuring All Might-inspired elements like a mask and respirator, underwent multiple revisions: "Costume Beta" offered enhanced durability, "Costume Gamma" added iron soles for kick-based combat, and "Costume Epsilon" incorporated Gran Torino's cape and Mid-Gauntlets for arm support. Later designs included "Costume Zeta" with darker colors and improved gloves, and his final "Costume Origin," which emerged during the battle against Tomura Shigaraki where he temporarily lost an arm to decay (later reversed by Eri's Rewind).
One For All evolved beyond raw strength, granting Izuku access to previous users' Quirks: Blackwhip (energy tendrils for capture/mobility), Float (aerial levitation), Danger Sense (precognitive threat detection), Smokescreen (smoke generation), Fa Jin (kinetic energy storage), and Gearshift (velocity manipulation). Initially struggling to control even 5% of One For All without self-injury, he developed "Full Cowl" to distribute power evenly across his body, later refining it into "Shoot Style" to emphasize kicks and reduce arm damage. His combat repertoire includes variations of "Smash" attacks (e.g., "Detroit Smash," "Delaware Smash") and combined moves like "1,000,000% Delaware Detroit Smash." Strategic analysis of opponents' Quirks, often manifested through obsessive mumbling, became a hallmark of his fighting style.
Izuku's personality blends nervousness with profound determination and self-sacrifice. Early timidity gradually gave way to leadership, inspiring classmates like Shoto Todoroki to overcome personal trauma. He maintained a meticulous habit of documenting hero Quirks in notebooks, reflecting his analytical mind. He reclaimed his derogatory childhood nickname "Deku" as his hero name and a symbol of perseverance after Ochaco Uraraka noted its resemblance to "dekiru" ("you can do it"). Key relationships shaped his growth: All Might served as mentor and father figure; Bakugō evolved from tormentor to respected rival; Uraraka provided emotional support, with mutual romantic feelings implied. Izuku extended empathy even to antagonists, attempting to understand or redeem figures like Lady Nagant, Gentle Criminal, and Tomura Shigaraki, whose buried humanity he believed could be saved.
During the Paranormal Liberation War, learning Tomura Shigaraki could steal One For All, Izuku left U.A. to protect his classmates, informing them of his Quirk's origin and the threat. This isolation led to a detached, battle-worn state, intensified by All For One's psychological warfare. Class 1-A intervened, reminded him of their bond and collective strength, and forcibly returned him to U.A. In the final war against All For One and Shigaraki, Izuku pushed One For All to its limits, temporarily merging with Blackwhip in a "Deku Overlay" form. After defeating Shigaraki, he lost all Quirks and reverted to Quirkless status. Post-graduation, he became a U.A. history teacher. Eight years later, technological advancements allowed him to resume hero work using a nano-tech suit resembling his "Costume Zeta," achieving the rank of No. 4 Pro Hero.
Beyond the main series, Izuku participated in critical missions like dismantling the Otheon drug ring and confronting the villain Nine. He also played a key role in rescuing Eri from Overhaul, reinforcing his ideal that heroes save even a single life. These events consistently demonstrated his strategic adaptability and unwavering resolve.
