Tomura Shigaraki, born Tenko Shimura, is the grandson of Pro Hero Nana Shimura. His father, Kotaro Shimura, intensely resented heroes due to Nana's abandonment, subjecting Tenko to severe physical and emotional abuse. This trauma manifested as chronic allergies, compelling Tenko to scratch the skin raw around his eyes. All For One orchestrated Tenko's birth and secretly stole his innate Quirk Factor during infancy, leaving him Quirkless. Later, when Tenko was five, All For One, disguised as a bystander, implanted the "Decay" Quirk into him.
Tenko's Decay Quirk first activated traumatically when he accidentally decayed the family dog. Panicked, he reached for his sister Hana, unintentionally killing her. His maternal grandparents and mother intervened next, only to be decayed too. Discovering the scene, his father attacked Tenko with gardening shears, scarring his face. In response, Tenko intentionally decayed his father, destroying their home. Orphaned and bloodied, he wandered the streets ignored by bystanders until All For One found him. Manipulating his trauma, All For One blamed hero society and gifted Tenko the embalmed hands of his deceased family, including his father's left hand as a face mask. He renamed him "Tomura Shigaraki" – "Tomura" meaning "to mourn" and "Shigaraki" being All For One's surname.
Physically, Tomura is slim with pale skin, chapped lips, a mole under his lower lip, and scars on his right eyelid and left lip from his father's attack. As a child, he had black hair and gray eyes; after his Quirk manifested, his hair turned bluish-gray and his eyes red. His signature attire incorporates fourteen disembodied hands: his mother's on his neck, his grandfather's on his arms, his grandmother's on his forearms, his sister's on his wrists, and two street punks' on his chest and shoulders. The hand covering his face, called "Father," is his father's left hand. Following events with allied forces, his hair turned white and he developed a muscular physique. Later, due to Quirk Singularity, his body mutated grotesquely with fingers covering his torso and family members' faces emerging from his limbs.
Tomura's personality evolved from a volatile, tantrum-prone "man-child" using video-game rhetoric into a strategic leader. Initially exhibiting childish impulsiveness, scratching his neck when frustrated and viewing allies as disposable, he developed loyalty to the League of Villains. He avenged Magne's death and Mr. Compress's injury, prioritized their autonomy, funded their lifestyles, and declared them exempt from his goal of societal destruction. His hatred for heroes stemmed from his father's abuse and society's failure to aid him after his family's death. He rejected All For One's manipulation, seeking to create a new world where his comrades could thrive.
His primary Quirk, Decay, disintegrates anything he touches with all five fingers. Post-awakening, it spread non-contact decay across Deika City. He inherited All For One, gaining abilities like super regeneration, flight, and radio-wave sensing. However, premature awakening at 75% completion caused his body to deteriorate under the Quirk's strain. The fusion of multiple Quirks triggered Quirk Singularity, morphing his body into a defensive form with protruding fingers and hands. All For One's vestige attempted possession, but Tomura resisted, reclaiming control temporarily before his body disintegrated during his final battle.
Tomura's relationship with All For One was complex. Initially revering him as a mentor, he later discovered All For One engineered his childhood suffering to mold him into a vessel. This revelation fueled Tomura's rebellion; he fought the vestige's control, vowing to surpass his master while acknowledging All For One's role in his strength. Within the League of Villains (later Paranormal Liberation Front), he treated members as comrades bonded by shared goals. His dynamic with Izuku Midoriya centered on their mirrored roles: Tomura as the Symbol of Fear opposing Izuku's Symbol of Peace, with Izuku seeking to save him due to their similar origins.
Throughout events, Tomura consolidated power by merging the League with the Meta Liberation Army, forming the Paranormal Liberation Front. During the Jaku Hospital raid, he awakened prematurely, battling Pro Heroes while resisting All For One's influence. In the final war, his mutated form emerged, weakened by Izuku's intervention via One For All vestiges destroying All For One's hold. Tomura's body crumbled, expressing gratitude to Nana Shimura for enabling his defiance, before his physical form disintegrated.
