Description
Tomura Shigaraki, originally named Tenko Shimura, is the grandson of Nana Shimura, mentor to the hero All Might. Born into a family scarred by tragedy, Tenko's father Kotaro nurtured bitter resentment toward heroes after Nana abandoned them for their protection. This resentment fueled severe abuse whenever Tenko admired heroes. His innate Quirk Factor was stolen by All For One before birth, leaving him Quirkless. At age five, All For One—disguised as an elderly man—implanted the Decay Quirk into Tenko while escorting him home after he rescued friends from a truck.
Tenko’s Decay Quirk erupted traumatically during an abusive episode. Locked outside with the family dog Mon, his distress disintegrated the animal. Panic escalated when he accidentally decayed his sister Hana as she approached him. Overwhelmed, he subsequently decayed his mother, maternal grandparents, and finally his father—intentionally—after being attacked with pruning shears. The Quirk annihilated their home, leaving Tenko orphaned and adrift. Bystanders ignored his visible anguish, deepening his isolation. All For One later discovered him beneath a bridge, manipulated his trauma, and took him in.
Renamed Tomura Shigaraki by All For One, he was groomed as a successor. "Tomura" (from "tomurau," meaning "to mourn") signified death and parting, while "Shigaraki" was All For One’s true surname. Kyudai Garaki, All For One’s associate, gifted Tomura embalmed hands of his deceased family. Worn as part of his villain costume, these hands suppressed positive emotions and amplified hatred. Initially struggling with violent impulses, Tomura embraced his destructive nature after All For One encouraged him to kill two street thugs, cementing his rebirth as a villain.
As leader of the League of Villains, Tomura aimed to kill All Might and dismantle hero society. Early portrayals showed him as volatile, arrogant, and childlike, frequently using video game terminology and clawing his neck when frustrated. His costume bore fourteen disembodied hands: his father’s hand ("Father") covered his face, while others belonged to his mother, grandfather, grandmother, sister, and the slain thugs. Most were later destroyed or discarded, except Nana Shimura’s hand, retained as a mask.
Tomura evolved from dependency into an independent leader after All For One’s imprisonment. Merging the League with the Meta Liberation Army, he formed the Paranormal Liberation Front as its Grand Commander. His Decay Quirk awakened during the Deika City battle against Re-Destro, achieving city-destroying range. He endured a painful procedure to inherit All For One’s original Quirk, gaining multiple abilities, enhanced strength, regeneration, and sensory powers. This transformation whitened his hair, muscularized his physique, and cracked his skin from Quirk strain. Ports emerged in his palms for Quirk activation.
The All For One Quirk triggered a vestige of All For One to seize Tomura’s body, attempting permanent merger. Tomura resisted by focusing on hatred for his childhood home and the society that failed him, reclaiming autonomy. He declared destroying everything tied to that house as his salvation—a mission separate from his master’s influence. All For One later revealed orchestrating Tomura’s suffering: manipulating Kotaro into having a child, stealing Tenko’s original Quirk, and implanting Decay to forge a perfect vessel, nearly shattering Tomura’s psyche.
Tomura’s personality blended nihilism with twisted loyalty. He condemned society as hypocritical for ignoring his childhood pleas, expanding his goal from killing All Might to annihilating all structures linked to his trauma—exemplified by attempting to decay all of Japan. Yet he deeply cared for the League of Villains as family. He mutilated Overhaul to avenge Magne’s death, shielded Twice from emotional manipulation, and assured allies their desires would survive his new world, contrasting his earlier view of subordinates as expendable.
His abilities centered on Decay, disintegrating anything touched by all five fingers. Post-awakening, it affected targets without contact. With All For One, he gained supplementary Quirks like super regeneration, radio-wave tracking, and enhanced mobility. During the final war, Quirk Singularity warped his body grotesquely: fingers multiplied into defensive masses, and family members’ faces manifested on his hands. After enduring Erasure and One For All transfer attacks, his body crumbled. All For One temporarily halted the decay using stolen Quirks, but his vestige consumed Tomura, leading to disintegration. Tomura’s spirit appeared briefly, smiling at Izuku Midoriya before vanishing.
