Shōto Todoroki is the youngest son of Pro Hero Endeavor and Rei Todoroki. His childhood endured intense, abusive training from Endeavor, determined to create a successor surpassing All Might by merging his fire Quirk with Rei's ice Quirk. This abuse, coupled with Endeavor's mistreatment of Rei, created profound familial trauma. Suffering a mental breakdown from the abuse, Rei poured boiling water on the left side of young Shōto's face, leaving a permanent scar and fueling his deep resentment toward his father. Following this incident, Rei was hospitalized, and Shōto's eldest brother, Toya, was believed dead, fracturing the family further.
Initially, Shōto adopted a cold, aloof demeanor, refusing to use the fire half of his Half-Cold Half-Hot Quirk—his right side generates ice, his left produces fire—as rebellion against Endeavor, symbolizing his rejection of that legacy. Overuse risks frostbite or heatstroke. His pivotal U.A. Sports Festival battle with Izuku Midoriya proved transformative. Izuku's words echoed Rei's encouragement that Shōto was "not a prisoner of his bloodline," compelling him to finally embrace his fire abilities. This acceptance began his emotional healing and gradual reconciliation with his past, though resentment toward Endeavor lingered.
Over time, Shōto grew more sociable and open with U.A. classmates, though he retained reserved tendencies and occasional social awkwardness. He acknowledged Endeavor's heroic capabilities but maintained emotional distance, emphasizing his interactions were for personal growth, not familial reconciliation. The revelation that his brother Toya survived and became the villain Dabi deeply impacted him. Witnessing Dabi's hatred mirror his own former self, Shōto resolved to stop his brother, recognizing the destructive path of unchecked resentment. This commitment involved confronting both Dabi and Endeavor's shared legacy while forging his own heroic identity.
In *World Heroes' Mission*, Shōto joined a global operation led by the World Heroes Association (WHA) to stop the extremist group Humarise, which planned to eradicate Quirk users worldwide using Trigger bombs. Deployed to Otheon with Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo during their Endeavor Agency internship, he wore a specialized black stealth suit featuring metal plating for temperature regulation and the WHA insignia. He aided in confronting thieves and later advised Izuku to evade capture after a framing incident. Alongside Bakugo, he provided critical support during a border clash against Humarise operative Beros. In the climax, he battled high-ranking Humarise members while assisting in disarming the bombs, showcasing refined control over both ice and fire.
Eight years after the Final War, Shōto graduated from U.A. and rose to become Japan's No. 2 Pro Hero. His physical appearance matured; he grew taller and leaner with a more muscular build, while his facial scar faded slightly. His hero costume retained its core design but incorporated updated wrist guards with blue accents, a bulkier tactical vest, and a vibrant ice-blue T-shaped stripe on the torso. This evolution reflected his continued commitment to heroism, distinct from Endeavor's legacy.
