Description
Misae Nohara, born Koyama, hails from Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture. She is married to Hiroshi Nohara and mother to Shinnosuke and Himawari Nohara, with sisters named Masae and Musae Koyama.
As the Nohara household's primary caretaker, she oversees cleaning, laundry, cooking, sewing, and childcare, achieving varying results. She demonstrates hypocritical behavior, enforcing strict rules on her husband and son only to disregard them privately. Disobedience or perceived misbehavior prompts physical punishment, including the "Guri-Guri Attack" (a head-drilling motion with her fists) or punches to the head.
Financially, she practices frugality regarding Hiroshi and Shinnosuke's discretionary spending but readily splurges on herself and Himawari. Frequent diet and savings plans typically collapse within a week. Compulsive shopping during sales leads to excessive purchases, rationalized as saving money. She secretly hoards personal savings, though these funds often get diverted to household emergencies, sometimes after Shinnosuke discovers the stash.
Body image concerns, particularly about her weight and breast size, fuel jealousy when Hiroshi interacts with other women. This insecurity manifests in her secretly following Hiroshi on work trips or confronting him after encounters with female acquaintances. Limited by an inability to use computers or speak English, her part-time jobs at local shopping malls are intermittent and often lost due to her volatile temper.
During the events of "Arashi o Yobu Mōretsu! Otona Teikoku no Gyakushū," she visits the 20th Century Expo with her family. Captivated by the nostalgia-themed attraction like other adults, she relives childhood memories, ultimately abandoning responsibilities and regressing to a childlike state under the expo's influence. Transported to a fabricated 20th-century world with other adults, she is left behind as the children remain.
Her son Shinnosuke spearheads the rescue effort. After Hiroshi is freed from the nostalgic trance—partly through Shinnosuke exploiting Hiroshi's foot odor to counteract the influence—they locate Misae. Together, they confront the antagonists Ken and Chaco to halt their plan to revert society to the 20th century. Their actions, combined with Shinnosuke's determination, help dismantle the artificial nostalgia, prompting adults to choose the present and future with their families over an idealized past.
Her driving skills are frequently depicted as poor, resulting in minor accidents or car scratches, often exacerbated by Shinnosuke’s intentional distractions. She relies on bicycles to transport Shinnosuke to kindergarten when he misses the bus. To prevent household mishaps in his absence, she takes Shinnosuke on errands, though these often lead to public embarrassment or his demands for compensation.
She maintains a close friendship with Keiko Honda, enjoying telephoning, shopping, and outdoor activities together. Despite her flaws, instances of generosity emerge, particularly toward her family during crises. Her character reflects the complexities of a postwar Japanese housewife, balancing familial duties with personal insecurities and aspirations.
