Misae Nohara, known as Mitsy Nohara in some dubs, is the matriarch of the Nohara family. Hailing from Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, she retains her maiden name, Misae Koyama. Her parents are Yoshiji and Hisae Koyama, and she has an older sister, Masae, and a younger sister, Musae. Misae married Hiroshi Nohara at 29, becoming mother to Shinnosuke and Himawari. Despite being 29, she often claims to be 24 or 25.
As a traditional Japanese housewife, Misae manages all household duties: cleaning, laundry, cooking, and childcare. Her daily routine involves significant struggles, especially ensuring Shinnosuke catches the school bus, frequently requiring her to chase it by bicycle. This motivated her to learn driving, though her skills are poor, leading to minor accidents and vehicle damage, often due to distractions from her children. She frequently takes Shinnosuke on errands to prevent household chaos, resulting in public embarrassment and his demands for toys or snacks. She sometimes invents playful scenarios during family activities to engage him.
Misae exhibits hypocrisy, enforcing strict rules on her family but readily breaking them herself. She disciplines through physical comedy like the "Guri-Guri Attack" (head drilling) and head punches causing large lumps ("Genkotsu Scene"). Financially, she minimizes spending on Hiroshi and Shinnosuke's non-essentials while indulging in luxuries for herself and Himawari. Compulsive shopping during sales leads her to buy excessive, impractical quantities, justifying her own splurges as necessary while denying similar requests. She secretly hoards money, though these savings are often found and used in emergencies. Purchases frequently end up broken or misused by the children.
Body image concerns about weight and breast size fuel extreme jealousy over Hiroshi's interactions with other women, causing her to secretly follow him on trips or confront him violently after misunderstandings. She harbors fantasies about romantic encounters with young European men, a trait passed to Himawari, and once attempted an affair with a younger vegetable seller after spending arguments. Her employment history is unstable; she works part-time, mainly at Action Departmental Store, but struggles to retain jobs due to a volcanic temper and intermittent explosive disorder. She briefly did home packaging work while living in the Falling Apartments. Computer illiteracy prevents office work.
Misae shares a close friendship with Keiko Honda, enjoying shopping, calls, and outings. She often neglects chores to socialize with neighbors like Mrs. Kitamoto or nap, hiding the naps to avoid criticism. Interactions with Shinnosuke involve varied approaches: reasoning (often ineffective), appeasement (rarely successful), or leveraging his affection for Nanako Ohara to encourage good behavior. Despite frequent arguments with Hiroshi over finances, housework, or his golf hobby, they consistently reconcile, showing underlying mutual devotion.
In the film *Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Shūrai! Uchūjin Shiriri*, an alien named Shiriri accidentally transforms Misae and Hiroshi into children, triggering a Japan-wide adventure to find Shiriri's father.
