Nakoruru is a young Ainu shrine maiden from Kamuikotan in Hokkaido, born in 1771, who serves as a guardian of nature. Calm, gentle, and pacifistic, she seeks non-violent solutions but will fight to protect the innocent or defend nature. Her abilities include nature empathy, allowing her to hear and sense nature's voice, projecting energy slashes with her kodachi, reflecting projectiles with her cloak, and healing wounds using natural powers. She is accompanied by a hawk named Mamahaha or a wolf named Shikuru, depending on her form. After her father's death, she became a Kamui warrior. In 1786, while searching for her missing father, she encountered a rabid bear. This triggered her aggressive alter-ego, Rera, who killed the bear. Rera later confronted the demon-possessed Gaoh. Following his defeat, Nakoruru and Rera merged, and Nakoruru accepted the power of the Kamui-kotan from her father's spirit, solidifying her role as nature's guardian. In 1788, she confronted the resurrected Amakusa Shiro Tokisada, whose actions disrupted nature's balance. She allied with warriors like Haohmaru and Galford to defeat him. Later that year, she confronted and killed the demonic Zankuro to purify his evil spirit, afterward comforting his son Shizumaru. In 1789, Amakusa revived again, and Nakoruru helped defeat him once more, though she was found unconscious afterward. Later that year, she faced the demon Mizuki, whose Makai void threatened nature. After Mizuki's defeat, Nakoruru sacrificed her life to restore nature's balance, becoming a spiritual entity. By 1790, her spirit was revived to combat a new evil, Yuga, who destroyed her village. She aided her sister Rimururu against this threat. In 1791, Yuga returned and enslaved Haohmaru, prompting Nakoruru's spirit to awaken again. Rimururu ultimately defeated Yuga but was pulled into a void with her. In 1810, Nakoruru discovered Rimururu trapped in a tree on Riten-Kyo island. She transformed into a fairy, sought help from Haohmaru, and successfully aided in her sister's revival. In the OVA "Samurai Spirits 2: Asura Zanmaden," Nakoruru protects Shiki, who is pursued by other warriors and the powerful Asura due to her connection to Yuga. Believing anyone with a heart deserves to live peacefully, she defends Shiki non-violently at first. After being pushed to her limits by Asura, she reluctantly draws her blade to fight. In a critical moment, Shiki takes a fatal blow meant for Nakoruru, and both sink into a portal to the underworld. This event leads Nakoruru to make peace with her alter-ego Rera and depart her village to search for news of Shiki's fate. Across various media, Nakoruru also possesses dimensional travel capabilities, allowing her to appear in different timelines and series, such as "The King of Fighters," where she senses and combats interdimensional threats.
