Description
Sōji Okita commands the first unit of the Shinsengumi, a Bakumatsu-era paramilitary force, balancing lethal swordsmanship with a carefree facade that conceals complexities from a fractured past. Orphaned early and raised at the Shieikan dojo, he forged an unyielding loyalty to Kondou Isami—mentor and surrogate father—that eclipsed personal bonds, fostering a detached, sardonic demeanor toward others.

When tuberculosis ravages his body, he defies treatment to remain with the Shinsengumi, his weakening frame starkly contrasting his lethal skill during the Ikedaya Incident. Desperation drives him to ingest the Ochimizu, a supernatural elixir curbing his illness at a cost: transformation into a fury with heightened power, relentless bloodlust, and fatal vulnerability to silver.

Chizuru Yukimura, the group’s persistent physician, disrupts his emotional detachment. Her unwavering empathy chips at his defenses, sparking protective instincts as they face her vengeful twin brother, Kaoru, and her father Kodo, creator of the Ochimizu. These trials force Okita to confront his mortality and the elixir’s futility, which delays but cannot halt his decline.

Kondou’s execution shatters Okita’s purpose, fueling a fury-driven crisis where rage targets vice-commander Hijikata Toshizō before redirecting toward safeguarding Chizuru. His allegiance evolves from blind duty to a personal vow, even as fury corruption amplifies his struggle between self-destruction and redemption.

Prequel explorations unveil a youth hardened by violence and Serizawa Kamo’s ruthlessness in the Roshigumi era, molding his utilitarian view of loyalty. Yet glimpses of vulnerability surface, particularly in silent camaraderie with Saitō Hajime and reluctant reliance on Chizuru’s support.

Post-recovery, sheared hair and Western garb mirror his evolving identity beyond the Shinsengumi, though his core—protecting those who anchor him—persists. Final arcs weigh legacy against acceptance, as he navigates consequences of fury choices while seeking to honor Kondou’s memory through actions tempered by his own scarred ethics.
