Lysandre is the leader of Team Flare and the main antagonist of the anime series Pokémon XY & Z, as well as the Mega Evolution specials. He is a tall, slender man with pointed orange hair and blue eyes, often dressed in a sleek black suit with red accents. Originally a philanthropist and the wealthy owner of Lysandre Labs, the company that developed the Holo Caster, he became disillusioned with humanity after witnessing what he saw as endless waste and conflict. His core motivation is to purge the world of those he considers unworthy and create a perfectly beautiful world, a goal he pursues by reactivating the ancient Ultimate Weapon hidden beneath Kalos. In the anime, Lysandre first appears in the Mega Evolution specials, where he forms a connection with the trainer Alain, providing him with a Mega Ring and Charizardite X in order to study Mega Evolution energy. He later emerges publicly during the Kalos League and takes control of Zygarde, using Chespie, a Pokémon belonging to Alain’s companion Mairin, as a power source. His key relationships include Professor Sycamore, an old friend whose research he exploits; Alain, whom he manipulates by promising power; and Ash Ketchum, whose Greninja’s unique form he becomes obsessed with. Lysandre commands a Pyroar and a Gyarados that can Mega Evolve, and he ultimately absorbs the power of Zygarde to form a gigantic, destructive construct. Throughout the series, his calm and charismatic exterior conceals a ruthless determination, and he shows no hesitation in sacrificing others for his ideal. His development traces a path from a hopeful inventor to a despairing extremist, culminating in a final confrontation where he is engulfed by Zygarde’s attack and seemingly vanishes. His role as the driving force behind Team Flare’s schemes makes him the central threat of the Kalos arc, and his actions force Ash, Alain, and the Gym Leaders to unite in defense of the region.
