Description
Kogorō Mōri runs the Mouri Detective Agency in Beika Town. A former Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One officer under Inspector Megure, he was known for his marksmanship and apprehension skills, though not as a particularly strong investigator. While his reasons for leaving the force are not definitively confirmed, an incident involving his wife Eri Kisaki during a hostage situation is suggested as a possible factor.

He remains married to Eri Kisaki, a first-class lawyer, but they have lived apart for over ten years. Their separation stems from constant arguments and Kogorō's unprofessional habits, including heavy drinking, smoking, gambling, and flirtatious behavior toward attractive women—especially pop idol Yoko Okino. Despite the estrangement, Kogorō persistently seeks reconciliation, feelings for Eri lingering. Eri rejects these overtures, citing his behavior, yet she also shows lingering affection through jealousy. Their daughter, Ran Mouri, lives with Kogorō and actively encourages her parents' reunion.

Kogorō's detective work is marked by laziness and unprofessionalism; he often leaps to erroneous conclusions. His reputation as "Sleeping Kogorō" arises because Conan Edogawa (Shinichi Kudo in a child form) regularly drugs him into unconsciousness and solves cases using a voice-changing device to imitate him, inadvertently bolstering Kogorō's public standing as a master detective. Despite general incompetence, he demonstrates genuine deductive skill and tenacity when cases involve personal stakes—especially threats to Eri or Ran. This includes solving a murder in Eri's hotel room during her birthday and clearing his own name when framed.

In *The Fist of Blue Sapphire*, Kogorō travels to Singapore with Ran and Sonoko Suzuki to support karate champion Makoto Kyogoku. Initially treating it as a vacation, he is drawn into a case involving the theft of the "Fist of Blue Sapphire" jewel and murders after reserve police officer Rishi Ramanathan approaches him. Kogorō agrees to investigate due to potential professional benefits from Rishi's police connections. His involvement remains secondary to Conan and Kaitō Kid, but he maintains his typical traits, including judo expertise honed as the ace of Beika University's team.

Kogorō attended Teitan High School and Beika University with Eri, Yukiko Fujimine, and actress Ruri Ujo. He struggles with medical issues common in middle age, such as high uric acid and cholesterol. While largely oblivious to Conan's manipulations, he occasionally displays situational awareness, like remembering solutions from his "sleeping" states in rare instances. His sense of justice emerges critically, exemplified by refusing to excuse murder regardless of motive.
