Description
Kogorō Mōri, a tall, fit man with slicked-back black hair, a mustache, and high cheekbones, typically seen in a blue sport coat with a shirt and tie, attended Teitan High School with Eri Kisaki, Yukiko Fujimine, and Ruri Ujo. He continued to Beika University, becoming the judo team ace despite battling stage fright. After graduation, he joined the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One under Inspector Megure. Recognition came for his marksmanship and teamwork in capturing criminals; he also had a brief assignment in the arson division under Inspector Yuminaga. His marriage to Eri produced their daughter, Ran, but ended in separation roughly ten years before the main events. Eri moved out due to persistent conflicts, including Kogorō's flirtations and domestic arguments over her poor cooking. A critical hostage incident further strained their relationship when Kogorō grazed Eri's leg with a bullet to save her. His departure from the police force around this time lacks confirmed direct links to this event in primary canon.

Leaving the force, Kogorō established the Mouri Detective Agency in Beika Town. His career floundered initially due to a lax work ethic, habitual drinking, smoking, gambling on horse races and mahjong, and prioritizing indulgences like watching his favorite idol Yoko Okino over cases. A significant shift occurred when Shinichi Kudo, shrunk into a child and living as Conan Edogawa, began covertly solving cases for him. Conan would tranquilize Kogorō with a stun-gun wristwatch during investigations, then reveal the solution using a voice-changing bowtie while Kogorō appeared unconscious. This method earned Kogorō the moniker "Sleeping Kogorō" and dramatically elevated his reputation, though he remained oblivious to Conan's role and credited the successes to himself. Despite this reliance, Kogorō retained basic investigative competence, effectively adhering to police procedures and questioning witnesses independently.

Kogorō's personality blends arrogance, impulsiveness, and flashes of professionalism. He habitually dismisses Conan's insights during cases, often reacting with physical admonishment, and makes rash judgments based on superficial evidence. His infatuation with attractive clients, especially Yoko Okino, strains his relationship with Eri and embarrasses Ran. Yet, he demonstrates fierce dedication when loved ones are involved. He independently solved a murder involving a college friend during a hot-spring trip, displaying such focused determination that Conan chose not to intervene. Similarly, when Eri was implicated in a hotel murder on her birthday, Kogorō meticulously led the investigation and later attempted to gift her an expensive necklace, though he mistakenly gave her a Buddhist rosary meant for another. These moments reveal underlying care contrasting his usual apathy.

His development surfaces in narratives like the film *One-Eyed Flashback*, where the murder of former colleague Koji Sametani drove him into a relentless, solitary pursuit of justice, masking grief with intense focus and rejecting Conan's help. This arc highlighted his desire to atone for past failures, including his estrangement from Eri and perceived shortcomings as a father. An OVA depicted him seemingly solving a televised mystery through deductive brilliance, later exposed as a ruse using pre-recorded footage accessed via DLNA technology. Another special portrayed him comically as a fugitive fearing pursuit, which culminated in the reveal that his "pursuers" were children seeking New Year's money.

Key relationships define his interactions. He respects Inspector Megure as a former partner and defers to his authority. His dynamic with Ran mixes overprotectiveness and affection, often manifesting as wariness toward Shinichi Kudo. Though estranged from Eri, mutual lingering feelings emerge during shared cases, prompting cautious reconciliation attempts. His relationship with Conan fluctuates between irritation and inadvertent dependence, though he remains unaware of Conan's true identity. His skills include judo proficiency for subduing suspects and sharpshooting retained from his police service. He has solved at least four cases unaided, with 18 resolved while awake, while Conan facilitated over 400 as "Sleeping Kogorō".
