OVA
Description
Yukina belongs to the Kōrime race, known as Ice Apparitions or Ice Maidens, an all-female demon clan inhabiting the Glacial Village within the Demon World. She possesses distinctive long greenish-cyan hair, typically tied in a low ponytail with a red ribbon, and red eyes, maintaining this appearance across anime, manga, and live-action adaptations, though her hairstyle evolved to a braid or high ponytail in later story arcs. Her standard attire is a light blue kimono with a darker blue obi, reflecting her cultural origins.

Born the fraternal twin sister of Hiei, their mother Hina conceived them through a forbidden relationship with a male fire demon, violating clan laws. Immediately after birth, Hiei was deemed cursed and cast from the village by Hina's friend Rui, while Yukina remained. Hina later committed suicide, leaving Yukina to be raised by Rui among the Ice Maidens. Yukina grew disillusioned by her people's emotional coldness and resolved to find her exiled brother.

Yukina's primary ability is producing Hiruiseki Stones (Crystal Tears), priceless jewels formed when her tears solidify. This trait made her a target for exploitation. She endured five years of captivity under the human Tarukane, who tortured her to force tear production. During this ordeal, she demonstrated ice manipulation by freezing her prison cell and developed resilience against crying. Her rescue came when Yusuke Urameshi and Kazuma Kuwabara intervened, with Kuwabara forming an immediate romantic attachment. Yukina healed Kuwabara's injuries using minor healing abilities but remained largely oblivious to his feelings, interpreting his affections as humor.

After her rescue, Yukina returned to Demon World but reappeared during the Dark Tournament to support Kuwabara and Yusuke. Her presence inadvertently empowered Kuwabara during a critical match, and she shed Hiruiseki stones when he appeared fatally wounded, signaling her growing emotional bond. She continued searching for her brother, unaware Hiei was actively protecting her in secret. Hiei concealed their relationship due to a vow to the demon Shigure and personal insecurities, telling Yukina they were half-siblings with different mothers during their first meeting.

In the OVA *Eizou Hakusho*, Yukina lived at Genkai's temple or with the Kuwabara family, depending on the medium. During a beach reunion, Hiei attempted to return their mother's tear stone, claiming her brother was dead. Yukina insisted he keep it, implying recognition despite his denial. Genkai later remarked to Hiei that Yukina "is not as naive as he believed."

Yukina's personality contrasts with her clan; she is kind-hearted, polite, and compassionate toward humans and nature, weeping over birds killed by Elder Toguro. Her arc concludes residing in the Human World, maintaining close ties with Kuwabara's family and the main cast, while her relationship with Hiei remains unspoken but mutually understood.
