Yukina belongs to the Kōrime race, known as Ice Apparitions or Ice Maidens, an all-female demon clan inhabiting the Glacial Village within the Demon World. She possesses distinctive long greenish-cyan hair, typically tied in a low ponytail with a red ribbon, and red eyes, maintaining this appearance across anime, manga, and live-action adaptations, though her hairstyle evolved to a braid or high ponytail in later story arcs. Born the fraternal twin sister of Hiei, their mother Hina conceived them through a forbidden relationship with a male fire demon, violating clan laws.
