Description
Dr. Easter is a freelance investigator and a highly skilled cyberneticist operating in the city of Mardock. His background is rooted in the development of advanced, and later restricted, technologies during the Commonwealth-Continent War. During this period, he was responsible for creating experimental innovations such as Lightite, a regenerative metal fiber designed to integrate with human tissue, and the polymorphic artificial intelligence known as Œufcoque Penteano. Following the war, restrictions were placed on his inventions, which led him to a new practical application of his work: operating as a caseworker under the emergency ordinance Mardock Scramble 09. This law authorizes the use of experimental life-saving cybernetics for the purpose of preserving witnesses who can testify in major legal cases.

In terms of personality, Dr. Easter presents as an eccentric figure, often dressing in unconventional, punk-rock-inspired attire, though he is capable of adopting a more polished and formal appearance, including silver-dyed hair and suits, when conducting undercover operations. Despite his sometimes unorthodox methods, he demonstrates significant patience and deep empathy, particularly towards vulnerable individuals. His primary motivation is not scientific curiosity for its own sake but rather a humanistic drive to prove the ethical viability of his creations by using them to protect the weak and expose institutional corruption.

His central role in the story is set in motion when he rescues a young woman named Rune Balot. She is found near death after a murder attempt by Shell Septinos, a powerful casino manager. Easter saves her life by reconstructing her body using his cybernetic technology, which grants her enhanced spatial awareness and technopathic abilities that allow her to interface with electronic devices. Because Balot is legally dead following the attack, her resurrection is authorized by the Mardock Scramble 09 ordinance, effectively making her a special investigator and a key witness in the legal case against Septinos. To aid her adaptation and her investigation, Easter assigns the shape-shifting AI Œufcoque to be her partner, serving as both a weapon and a source of psychological support.

Dr. Easter maintains several key relationships that drive the narrative. His bond with Rune Balot evolves into a distinctly paternal dynamic; he later admits that he sees her as a surrogate for his estranged daughter, as they share a similar age and circumstances. This sentiment fuels his dedication to her psychological recovery as much as her physical safety, and he actively monitors her mental state throughout their mission. His relationship with the AI Œufcoque is notably different, characterized by frequent bickering and verbal sparring that belies a deep, long-standing, and mutually dependent partnership. He also has a significant and adversarial history with the cyborg assassin Dimsdale Boiled. The two were once partners, but their association ended in a bitter feud due to irreconcilable ethical differences, and Boiled later becomes a direct threat to Balot and Œufcoque.

Throughout the story, Dr. Easter shows notable development as his past ethical complacency is confronted by the present. Having once been a pure researcher, his experiences lead him to oppose the October Corporation's exploitation of his life's work for criminal ends, including the actions of Shell Septinos. He believes the corporation's incapacitated founder would condemn their current corrupt practices. While he typically avoids direct combat, preferring to operate as a strategist and scientist, he is willing to take up arms and intervene directly when Balot and Œufcoque are in mortal danger, such as retrieving a rifle to confront Dimsdale Boiled.

His notable abilities lie not in physical combat but in his strategic genius and technological mastery. He is an expert in cybernetics capable of performing life-saving augmentations and creating sentient AI constructs. His strategic thinking is exemplified in the trilogy's climax, where he orchestrates a complex casino heist to retrieve a critical piece of evidence—a memory chip belonging to Shell Septinos—understanding its decisive value for their legal battle. He also operates out of a mobile command center and utilizes advanced data analysis displays to coordinate missions.
