Negi Springfield is a ten-year-old Welsh mage, son of the legendary wizard Nagi Springfield and Arika Anarchia Entheofushia, the last queen of Vespertatia. Following his mother's death and father's disappearance, his cousin Nekane Springfield raised him. Demons attacked his village at age four; Nagi intervened, saved him, gifted him his staff, and departed again, fueling Negi's determination to find him.
He graduated top of his class from magic school at nine under the Kazoe age-counting system. As training to become a Magister Magi, he was assigned as English teacher and homeroom instructor for Class 2-A at Japan's Mahora Academy, later teaching Class 3-A. His students included 31 girls, though class size fluctuated. Early unstable magic control caused accidental exposures like disrobing spells. He formed multiple "Pactio" contracts with students, sealed with a kiss, to gain magical partners and access their unique artifacts.
Academically and in leadership, he displayed maturity beyond his years, yet retained childlike traits like gullibility, aversion to baths, and obliviousness to his students' romantic feelings. He frequently overworked himself in magic and combat training, driven by a desire to emulate his father. Core motivations included protecting his students and uncovering Nagi's fate.
Magically, he specialized in wind and lightning. Early abilities featured basic attacks like Sagitta Magica and utility spells like Refectio for mental refreshment. Physical limitations prompted martial arts training under KÅ« Fei and later Evangeline McDowell, mastering techniques such as Instant Movement. He developed advanced tactics like delayed spells for surprise attacks and combining martial arts with magic. Learning the dark art Magia Erebea, which merges spell energy with the body, provided a significant power boost. Initial use caused physical corruption, but after near-fatal encounters, he mastered it, gaining enhanced strength, regeneration, and speed rivaling top fighters like Jack Rakan. His artifact Mile Vincula allowed temporary use of his partners' Pactio weapons.
Key conflicts drove his growth: an early battle against the vampire Evangeline necessitated his first Pactio with Asuna Kagurazaka, whose Magic Cancel ability nullified Eva's powers. During a Kyoto trip, he fought eastern mages targeting student Konoka Konoe, leading to more Pactios and encounters with antagonist Fate Averruncus. At the Mahora Festival, he used a time machine to multitask events while thwarting student Chao Lingshen's attempts to alter history.
Traveling to the Magic World to find Nagi, he formed the Ala Alba brigade with his students. There, he learned the world was a failing magical construct on Mars, and Fate's group sought to erase its artificial inhabitants using Asuna's powers. Negi allied with Magic World armies to stop them, confronting Fate and the Lifemaker—revealed as Nagi possessed by an ancient entity. The conflict ended with Nagi urging Negi to destroy his body to prevent further havoc.
In later years, he married student Chisame Hasegawa, fathered a child, and became the new Thousand Master. He reconciled with Nagi, who returned alive, and maintained ties with Eva, now his stepmother. His grandson Touta Konoe emerged as the protagonist of the sequel *UQ Holder!*. Alternate portrayals include the *Negima!?* anime, where he investigated the Star Crystal's disappearance with new allies like the cat-and-frog agents Shichimi and Motsu, and Nekane as the masked Black Rose Baron. Game appearances saw him aiding other dimensions, such as rescuing Rakenzarn from a plague.
