Description
Grovyle is a Grass-type Pokémon who serves as a central figure in the special anime episode Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Toki to Yami o Meguru Saigo no Bōken. His backstory is rooted in a dark, parallel future where time has stopped completely, a cataclysmic event known as the planet’s paralysis. Hailing from this ruined world, Grovyle’s primary mission is to travel to the past to prevent this disaster from ever occurring.

Initially, Grovyle is portrayed as an antagonist. He is seen stealthily stealing Time Gears, ancient artifacts that control the flow of time in specific locations. The protagonist and their partner, a rescue team, are tasked with stopping him, believing his actions are causing time to freeze in various areas. This perception makes him a fugitive, pursued across the land. However, his motivations are far from selfish. Grovyle is driven by a profound sense of purpose and sacrifice. He knows that if he succeeds in changing the past and restoring the flow of time, his own dark future—and consequently, his very existence—will be erased. Despite this, he presses forward, willing to give up his life to save a world he may never get to live in.

His personality reflects this heavy burden. While initially seeming cold and ruthless in his single-minded pursuit of the Time Gears, Grovyle is later revealed to be deeply caring and heroic. He is impatient and quick to act, but this stems from his urgent knowledge of the stakes involved. He possesses a sharp intellect and is a skilled strategist, having spent a long time evading the forces hunting him. As the story progresses, his true nature as a noble and selfless Pokémon comes to light. He becomes a crucial ally to the hero and their partner, explaining the truth about the planet’s paralysis and the need to restore the Time Gears to the Temporal Tower.

Grovyle’s key relationships are integral to the plot. He shares a deep, unexplained bond with the hero, who is also revealed to be a human from the same dark future. Before the story begins, they were partners on a mission to change history, though the hero lost their memory upon arriving in the past. This connection makes Grovyle fiercely protective of the hero. He also has a significant and adversarial relationship with Dusknoir, a mysterious Pokémon who initially appears as an ally to the protagonist. Dusknoir is eventually revealed to be a servant of Primal Dialga, the corrupted legendary Pokémon of time, sent to ensure the dark future comes to pass. At the climax, Grovyle faces Dusknoir and Primal Dialga alongside his allies. In a pivotal moment, he chooses to sacrifice himself, staying behind to hold off their enemies and ensuring the hero and their partner can reach the Temporal Tower to restore time.

Throughout his journey, Grovyle demonstrates notable abilities befitting a powerful warrior. He is exceptionally agile and utilizes a variety of Grass-type moves. His signature technique is Leaf Blade, where he uses the sharp leaves on his arms as blades. He is also proficient with Quick Attack, allowing for lightning-fast strikes, and Dig, which he uses not only for combat but also for tactical escapes and stealth. His ability, Overgrow, powers up his Grass-type moves when he is in a pinch. His combat prowess and unwavering determination make him a formidable force, capable of standing up to legendary Pokémon like Dialga to buy his friends the time they need to save the world.
