Description
Ruth, originally named Ulysse, is a Church Grim bound as Chise Hatori’s familiar. Once a black dog companion to a girl named Isabel, he lingered by her graveside after her passing, steadfastly awaiting her revival. His unwavering devotion gradually morphed him into a spectral guardian of cemeteries, deterring trespassers and thieves across centuries while clinging to human-like sentience. This persisted until his fateful meeting with Chise reshaped his existence.

As a grim, Ruth manifests as a towering black canine with piercing crimson eyes, standing shoulder-high to Chise. His human guise presents light brown skin, tousled ebony hair, and crimson irises, clad in muted grey and black attire. After forging his pact with Chise, his human form regressed from a grown man to a youth mirroring her age.

Ruth’s nature intertwines unshakable loyalty with vigilant adaptability. A psychic tether links him to Chise, facilitating shared thoughts, emotions, and lifeforce. This bond lets him vocalize her hidden sentiments and shield her from harm. Lingering canine instincts emerge sporadically—chasing small animals, wariness toward strangers—yet he tempers these traits with empathy, fluidly shifting between playful teasing and solemn resolve.

Pivotal moments define his journey: shielding Chise from a spectral assault in a graveyard, forging their familiar pact to escape absorption into Cartaphilus’ chimera, and receiving his new name, Ruth (“compassionate friend” in Hebrew), cementing their kinship. He later faced a chimera crafted from Isabel’s reanimated remains, granting her final peace.

Ruth’s role expands alongside Chise’s trials—crafting wands, battling dragons in London, navigating academia. He thwarts rituals, tracks abducted allies, and counters magical threats using shadow-melding, fiery breath, and shape-shifting. Though conflicted at times, such as hesitating during Philomela’s confrontation with her grandmother, his allegiance to Chise never wavers.

Rooted in centuries of gravekeeping and devotion, Ruth’s evolution from Isabel’s guardian to Chise’s sibling-like ally mirrors themes of identity and bonds forged through sacrifice. His duality as protector and autonomous being fuels ongoing growth, yet his priority remains unwavering: ensuring Chise’s survival, whatever the cost.
