Description
Kurapika is the last survivor of the Kurta Clan, an ethnic group secluded within Lukso Province's forests. The Kurta possess distinctive irises that turn scarlet during intense emotions, coveted as rare jewels. As a child, curiosity about the outside world sparked within him, fueled by a book from an outsider named Sheila. Meeting her intensified his desire to explore, leading to debates with the clan's elder over their isolation. A pivotal moment occurred when his best friend, Pairo, sustained permanent eye and leg injuries saving Kurapika from a cliff fall. Driven by guilt, Kurapika resolved to find a doctor for Pairo. After passing the elder's rigorous tests—including a self-control trial where hired provocateurs nearly provoked his anger—he earned permission to leave. He departed after promising Pairo they would explore the world together. Six weeks later, the Phantom Troupe massacred the Kurta Clan, torturing and murdering 128 members to harvest their eyes. Kurapika returned to bury the decapitated bodies and swore vengeance.
He entered the 287th Hunter Examination to gain resources for tracking the Phantom Troupe. During the exam, he initially clashed with Leorio Paradinight over differing motivations but later befriended him, Gon Freecss, and Killua Zoldyck. Their bond solidified during trials like rescuing a crew member in a storm. After passing, he focused on mastering Nen, a life-energy system enabling parapsychological abilities. His innate Nen type is Conjuration, manifesting as chains controlled by his right hand. However, scarlet eyes trigger a Specialist state, "Emperor Time," granting 100% mastery of all Nen types at a cost of one hour of lifespan per second of use. His chains possess distinct abilities:
- Thumb: Holy Chain (healing)
- Index Finger: Steal Chain (aura theft, later evolving into Stealth Dolphin for ability analysis and lending)
- Middle Finger: Chain Jail (restraint and Nen suppression, lethal if used on non-Phantom Troupe members)
- Ring Finger: Dowsing Chain (divination and lie detection)
- Little Finger: Judgment Chain (rule enforcement via heart-piercing contract)
In Yorknew City, Kurapika allied with the Nostrade mafia family as head bodyguard to access the underground Scarlet Eyes auction. He confronted the Phantom Troupe, killing Uvogin using Chain Jail and Emperor Time. Later, he captured their leader, Chrollo Lucilfer, sealing his Nen with Judgment Chain. He exchanged Chrollo for Gon and Killua after their kidnapping, an event leading to Pakunoda's sacrificial death. While he recovered some eyes, he later discovered auctioned pairs were fakes created by Troupe member Kortopi. His journey left him conflicted, questioning his revenge after witnessing the Troupe's loyalty but ultimately persisting in his mission.
Years later, recruited into the Hunter Association's Zodiacs as "Rat" upon Leorio's recommendation, he accepted after learning Kakin Empire prince Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou possessed the final collection of Kurta eyes, including Pairo's. He joined the voyage to the Dark Continent as bodyguard to Prince Woble to reclaim them. During this mission, he revealed Stealth Dolphin's evolved capabilities: analyzing stolen Nen abilities and temporarily lending them. Emotionally, retrieving his clan's eyes brought no peace; instead, he grappled with profound loss, stating he "lost something" with each recovered pair.
The film *Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge* expanded his backstory. Investigating rumors of a Kurta survivor, he encountered a boy resembling Pairo who stole his eyes, orchestrated by former Troupe member Omokage seeking revenge. Kurapika defeated Omokage's puppets with Gon, Killua, and Leorio, retrieving his eyes. The real Phantom Troupe confronted him afterward but deferred conflict. The film incorporated Togashi's unpublished story about Kurapika's childhood. Another film, *Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission*, depicted Kurapika confronting the invader Shura during a tournament.
Kurapika's personality balances calm intellect with vengeful fury. Initially judgmental and reserved, he values logic and strategy but harbors deep-seated rage toward those who desecrate his clan's memory. Interactions with Gon's group softened him, leading him to prioritize their safety over revenge at times. His quest remains self-destructive; Emperor Time's lifespan cost and Chain Jail's lethal restriction reflect his willingness to sacrifice himself. He wears black contacts to conceal his eyes and adopts formal attire in later arcs. His core motivation endures: "I do not fear death. What I fear is that my rage will one day fade away."
