Description
Benio Hanamura, a spirited 17-year-old tomboy, grows up in early 20th-century Tokyo under the care of her widowed father, a high-ranking military official, during the Taisho era. Her mother’s absence and unorthodox upbringing fuel her rejection of traditional femininity, steering her toward kendo, sake, and Western attire rather than domesticity. Inspired by feminist ideals from *Seito* magazine, she champions women’s autonomy and career aspirations, vehemently opposing arranged marriages.

Her defiance meets a challenge when a family pact forces her engagement to Shinobu Ijuin, a half-Japanese, half-German army lieutenant. Determined to sabotage the union, she disrupts his household with deliberate incompetence in wifely duties and public antics. Yet, Shinobu’s unexpected kindness and respect for her independence soften her resistance, sparking mutual affection.

Shinobu’s deployment to Manchuria and presumed death catalyze Benio’s transformation. She shears her long hair into a modern bob, signaling her resolve to sustain his family financially. Embarking on a journalism career, she initially stumbles in unconventional roles like geisha work, her defiance clashing with societal norms.

Shinobu’s return with amnesia—believing himself wed to Russian countess Larissa—plunges Benio into despair, driving her to两次自杀尝试: submerging her head in water and overdosing on sake, both interventions thwarted. Despite turmoil, she clings to loyalty, briefly entertaining a marriage proposal from editor Tosei out of gratitude before reaffirming her bond with Shinobu.

Her evolving wardrobe mirrors her journey: rebellious patterns yield to polished professionalism, embodying her maturation. Allies like Tamaki, a gracefully progressive friend, and Ranmaru, a cross-dressing kabuki actor, reflect her rejection of rigid gender roles and prioritize unwavering loyalty.

The 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake tests her resilience, yet she stands firm in her ideals. After Larissa’s sacrificial death and Shinobu’s regained memories, their shared trials forge a renewed partnership, cementing Benio’s evolution into a self-reliant woman navigating a changing world.
