Description
Denji is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series Chainsaw Man. He is a young man who, at the start of the story, lives in extreme poverty. He spends his days working as a devil hunter for the yakuza to pay off a debt inherited from his deceased father, aided only by his small, dog-like companion, Pochita, who is the Chainsaw Devil.

After being betrayed by the yakuza and killed in a contract with the Zombie Devil, Denji is given a second chance. Pochita makes a contract with him, merging with Denji's body to become his heart. In exchange for this new life, Denji agrees to show Pochita his dreams. This event grants Denji the ability to transform into the devil-human hybrid known as Chainsaw Man by pulling a cord that protrudes from his chest.

Denji's personality is heavily shaped by a life of struggle, malnutrition, and a lack of formal education. He is initially loud, crude, and socially inept, often acting on pure impulse and basic desires. Having never experienced comfort or affection, his primary motivations are simple, physical, and immediate. His goals include eating nutritious food, living in a warm home, and having intimate relationships with women, which is a stark contrast to the lofty ambitions of typical heroes in his genre. Despite his selfish tendencies, he is capable of great empathy and care for those he considers family, particularly Pochita and later his fellow devil hunters Aki Hayakawa and Power.

In the story, Denji is recruited into the Public Safety Devil Hunters by the enigmatic Makima. He is assigned to the Tokyo Special Division 4 and tasked with hunting down the immensely powerful Gun Devil, with Makima promising to grant him any wish he desires if he succeeds. His role evolves from a desperate survivor to a government asset and a public figure, all while he struggles to understand basic human relationships and find happiness.

Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Pochita is the emotional core of his character, representing pure, selfless friendship. His living situation with his stoic and exasperated colleague Aki and the chaotic Blood Fiend Power creates a found family dynamic, teaching him about companionship and loss. His relationship with Makima is complex and ultimately tragic, as he idolizes her for her kindness, only to discover she is a manipulative force orchestrating his suffering. Later, he becomes the caretaker of Nayuta, the reincarnated Control Devil.

Throughout the series, Denji undergoes significant development. He begins as a boy with no dreams other than basic survival. After experiencing friendship, betrayal, and devastating loss, he matures, learning to think for himself and question authority. He eventually enrolls in high school, attempting to live the normal life he always wanted, while still protecting the world as Chainsaw Man.

As Chainsaw Man, Denji possesses a range of notable abilities. In his hybrid form, he manifests sharp, powerful chainsaws from his head and limbs, granting him superhuman strength, speed, and durability. His primary ability is regeneration; by consuming blood, he can heal from almost any wound, reattach limbs, and even come back from the brink of death. In a true devil form, his power becomes even more fearsome, allowing him to erase the existence of other devils and the concepts they represent by consuming them. However, his powers rely on a supply of blood, and he can be weakened if he loses too much.
