Following Brigandia’s victory over the Kingdom of Sylvario, the knight Ark McGuine is dispatched to collect Princess Sonia, who has been offered as a hostage bride to Brigandia’s third prince in exchange for reduced war reparations. When the princess fails to arrive on the agreed date, Ark is forced to lead an investigation into her disappearance.

His search reveals a horrifying truth. Princess Sonia was an unwanted, abused child, mistreated and neglected by her own family. Far from being waylaid by bandits, she had fled her country’s capital in an unmarked carriage with only her two loyal servants, effectively making her own death a certainty to escape her tormentors. Ark returns to Brigandia, despairing over a love for a woman he never met, until he encounters a girl named Nia in the capital who looks exactly like the princess.

The narrative primarily follows Ark’s perspective as he uncovers the mistreatment of the princess, though Sonia receives several point-of-view scenes that reveal her intelligence and craftiness. Unlike many heroines, Sonia is not naive or forgiving; she desires to see her abusive family destroyed and actively works toward that goal. Her loyal servants, Laura and Tom, are more capable than they initially appear, functioning as highly competent attendants. Using Nia’s intellect and the bonds she formed with commoners during her time as princess, alongside Ark’s strength, they successfully counter these plots and capture the scheming prince. The story resolves with the couple solidifying their new life together, free from the machinations of the Sylvarian royal family.
