Description
Yusei and Itsuki have been inseparable since childhood, but now that they are in high school, a strange distance has grown between them. Yusei has begun to insist that he hates his best friend, though this is a story he tells himself to mask a far more confusing truth. Itsuki is gifted, charming, and talented at everything he does, from academics to sports. He could easily join any team or gain admission to any prestigious university, yet he continues to spend all his time with Yusei. Struggling with feelings he cannot fully understand or accept, Yusei pretends to despise Itsuki, hoping that creating emotional distance will help him overcome these unwanted emotions. The question is whether this pretense can truly change what he feels, and what Itsuki might be hiding about his own heart.
The story is told primarily from Yuseis perspective, capturing the intensity and confusion of adolescent emotion. He watches Itsuki navigate high school with effortless popularity, attracting attention from girls and admiration from peers, which only deepens Yuseis sense of inadequacy and his resolve to pull away. Yet Itsuki, noticing this withdrawal, refuses to let Yusei go. Despite his cheerful and confident exterior, there are hints of vulnerability in Itsuki, including a strained relationship with his older brother that suggests he too carries unspoken burdens. Short flashbacks to their shared childhood interrupt the present-day narrative, illustrating how natural and effortless their closeness once was, which makes the current tension all the more poignant.
Set against the backdrop of everyday high school life, the manga explores the push and pull of two friends navigating the fragile line between friendship and something more. The supporting cast includes friends like Toji and Tsugumi, as well as girls like Minami and Shinohara who take an interest in the two boys, adding social pressure and external perspectives to their dynamic. The series is a complete story told in two volumes, which were originally serialized in Japan from 2021 to 2023. Rather than relying on grand dramatic gestures, the narrative builds through unspoken glances, small pauses, and the quiet, painful uncertainty of growing up and realizing that feelings can change in ways that are hard to name.
