Description
Harue Shindo is a forty-two-year-old chief engineer who has spent his entire life avoiding romance, leading to a complete lack of dating experience. As a gay man, he has long tried to ignore this part of himself, believing it is too late to find love. His perspective changes when his company develops a dating app, and after accidentally matching with a profile he suspects is too attractive to be genuine, he meets Yoshitaka Fujishima in person outside a bar near his workplace. Fujishima is also a gay man in his forties who works as a wedding planner, a job that keeps him constantly busy and often requires him to wear glasses to appear less intimidating to his clients. Despite Harue's self-consciousness about being plain and inexperienced, the two immediately connect over drinks. Their conversation flows so freely that they lose track of time and miss the last train home, leaving them with no choice but to spend the night together at a nearby hotel.

The story is set in contemporary Japan, primarily following the daily routines of two overworked professionals navigating the challenges of dating later in life while balancing demanding careers. The narrative opens with Harue reflecting on his relationship with Fujishima before circling back to show how they first met, establishing from the outset that Harue's age and sense of mortality weigh heavily on his thoughts about time and what kinds of public affection might be appropriate for someone his age.

The central narrative arc follows Harue and Fujishima as they move from a spontaneous first encounter to building a genuine relationship. Harue, deeply insecure and prone to overthinking, constantly doubts whether he deserves happiness or whether Fujishima's interest in him can possibly be real. Fujishima, by contrast, carries himself with natural confidence and a defiant attitude toward societal expectations, particularly Japan's legal stance on same-sex marriage. As a wedding planner, he pours extra effort into same-sex weddings whenever he gets the chance, insisting that he wants to live in a way that does not require him to silence the parts of himself that do not align with what the Japanese constitution states. Their differing personalities create moments of tenderness as Fujishima patiently reassures Harue that he is loved precisely for being himself, not for changing into someone else.

The story addresses the reality that finding time for romance in middle age is difficult. Their dates are often spontaneous, squeezed in after long workdays when both men are exhausted, and the manga subverts expectations by focusing not on physical intimacy but on the emotional joy and doubt that come from meeting someone you truly like when you are older. The volume is self-contained with eight chapters, originally serialized from February 2022 to February 2024, and follows Harue and Fujishima as they reach for happiness despite fears of rejection, feeling too old, and the lingering possibility of remaining alone forever.
