Saya is born into a family of powerful shrine maidens who use their abilities to serve the gods, but she possesses only weak powers. Persecuted by her stepmother and stepsister, she is eventually sold to a shojo, a mysterious being from another world. There, Saya meets a god named Hozuki, who is widely reviled and considered hideously ugly due to a curse placed upon him for unknown reasons. However, Saya perceives something entirely different when she looks at him, seeing past the curse to his true form.

The story follows Saya as she becomes the bride of Hozuki, the fire god, though she initially believes she has been hired merely as a cleaner for his domain. Despite his fearsome reputation and the grotesque appearance everyone else sees, Hozuki treats Saya with kindness and respect, even refusing to force the consummation of their contractual marriage. As Saya diligently works to fulfill her duties, her pure and earnest nature begins to affect those around her. She gradually develops feelings for Hozuki, who reciprocates her affection while struggling with the belief that his cursed state makes him unworthy of her.

The narrative explores the growing bond between the cursed god and the exiled daughter as outside forces, including Saya vengeful stepmother and stepsister, attempt to tear them apart. A significant early arc involves the awakening of Saya latent shamanic powers, which ironically causes Hozuki to consider letting her go, believing she deserves someone uncursed. Another arc features a curse from a pot that physically binds the couple together, forcing them into closer proximity and accelerating their emotional connection. The story also introduces supporting characters such as the shojo who sold Saya, described as beautiful winged beings, and the boisterous Iron God, who appears as a handsome but rowdy young man.

The setting blends Taisho era aesthetics with a richly imagined spiritual realm where gods, yokai, and humans interact. The central conflict stems from the disparity between how others see Hozuki and how Saya sees him, with the mystery of his curse and the possibility of its resolution driving much of the tension.
