Description
The manga The Guardman is a semi-autobiographical story drawn from a horrific episode in the life of Higuchi Takehiro during his time working as a security guard at a nightclub in Roppongi, Tokyo’s notorious nightlife district. The narrative draws directly from the author’s real-life experiences and is further informed by his notoriety as the man who defeated fighter Mikuru Asakura in the Breaking Down mixed martial arts event.
The setting is the volatile and high-tension environment of a Roppongi club, a place where the city’s glamorous exterior gives way to a dangerous underworld of criminals, gangsters, and intoxicated patrons. The main character is a version of Higuchi himself, a security guard whose job is to maintain order and protect the club’s guests, a task that frequently escalates into physical violence and moral dilemmas. The storyline focuses on his daily confrontations with the club’s most dangerous visitors and the psychological toll of working in a space where chaos is a constant threat.
The narrative is brought to life by a notable creative team. Character design and composition are handled by Tokoro Juzo, a veteran known for his work on delinquent manga such as Shikigami Densetsu: Taku's Sukkou and Dolphin. The writing is credited to Shimahoshi Mitsuichi, whose style was recognized and encouraged by the legendary creator Matsumoto Leiji. The manga began publication in 2024 and is ongoing, chronicling the protagonist’s struggle to survive and enforce his own brand of justice within the brutal ecosystem of the Tokyo nightlife scene.
