Description
When a year of bad harvests pushes the Rabbit Tribe to the brink of starvation, an unlikely savior arrives from the Wolf Tribe. The wolves offer a simple but devastating bargain: monthly food rations for two years in exchange for a bride for the son of the prominent Kuroe family. With no other options and pressure from his relatives, the young rabbit Kaede is chosen as the sacrifice, leaving his family to secure their survival.

The story takes place in a world reminiscent of feudal Japan, populated by anthropomorphic animal tribes where humans exist with prominent animal features like ears and tails. Kaede arrives in the wolf village as a reluctant bride, determined to make the best of his fate and find some semblance of happiness in his new life. His betrothed is Ren, the moody and cold heir to the Kuroe family who wants nothing to do with the forced arrangement. From the moment they meet, the two clash constantly, unable to establish any meaningful form of communication. Ren views Kaede as nothing more than a formal obligation tied to his future role as tribe chief, treating him with cold indifference.

The central conflict of the story revolves not just around their clashing personalities, but also the rituals that bind them. Ren explains that for Kaede to become his partner, they must endure a physical acclimation period called the Kataika, which forces them into intimate situations despite their mutual reluctance. These early encounters are portrayed as uncomfortable for both, driven by obligation rather than desire, which strains their relationship further. Kaede finds himself vulnerable and frustrated, while Ren remains distant and closed off, rejecting Kaede emotionally while still performing his ritual duties.

Despite this difficult beginning, the wolf tribe itself proves surprisingly welcoming. Many of its members work to make Kaede feel like part of their family, treating him with genuine kindness and friendship. Through these interactions, Kaede gains opportunities to observe Ren from a different perspective and slowly begins to understand the walls his fiance has built. Ren gradually starts opening up as well, revealing hidden depths and reasons for his harsh demeanor. A relationship of trust begins to form between them, built on small moments of understanding and mutual respect rather than instant attraction.

One notable narrative arc follows Kaedes integration into wolf society as he learns their customs and proves his resilience despite his prey nature. His sincere emotions and polite determination win over many tribe members who initially saw him as an outsider. Another arc centers on the breakdown of communication between the betrothed and the explosive breakthroughs that follow when Kaede finally confronts Ren directly, leading to genuine emotional vulnerability. The story culminates in their relationship evolving from forced obligation to authentic connection, with the two learning to bridge the gap between predator and prey. The ending resolves their personal journey while leaving Kaedes place in the wolf tribe secure and meaningful, no longer just a sacrifice but a true partner.
