Minglin is the daughter of the head of the Haku clan, a family that protects the nation with special powers. She is considered a powerless, useless shrine maiden without a fated mate. She has lived since birth with her guardian beast, Taikou, who has always searched for her destined soulmate without success. Despite being treated as incompetent, Minglin remains positive and diligently trains to find ways she can contribute.

One day, the Haku family estate is burned down and Minglins mother is killed by a demon. Taikou carries the injured Minglin to the mountains to escape.
