After the kingdom of Brigandia wins a war against Sylvario, the defeated nation offers the hand of its fourth princess, Sonia, in marriage to a Brigandian prince in exchange for reduced financial reparations. But the princess never arrives. Ark McGuine, the head of the Brigandian knights, is sent to investigate the disappearance of the royal hostage. As he travels the route her carriage would have taken, he discovers that no one saw any royal procession pass by, and a darker truth emerges from the princess’s homeland. Princess Sonia was an unwanted child who had been neglected and mistreated by her own family. Rather than being captured by bandits, she fled her country voluntarily in an unmarked carriage with only two loyal servants.

Believing Princess Sonia to have perished on the road, Ark returns to Brigandia, mourning a love that never had the chance to begin. However, he soon encounters a young woman named Nia in the capital who is the spitting image of the missing princess. Through her own cunning and the help of her devoted attendants, Sonia successfully escaped her life as a captive princess and is now living in hiding under a false name. As Ark pieces together the truth, he falls in love with the clever and resilient Nia, who harbors a desire to see her abusive family face justice rather than simply forgiving them. The two form a bond and marry unofficially by the end of the first narrative arc.

The story follows Ark and Nia as they move to their new domain. Their territory is plagued by bandits who are soon revealed to be agents sent by Nia’s own brother, the second prince of Sylvario. Using the loyalty Princess Sonia cultivated with the common people and her knowledge of medicine, Nia helps win over the townsfolk and devise a plan to trap her brother, exposing him as the instigator. The final volume introduces additional complications, including a secret saint subplot and a villainess character whose schemes evoke classic otome game tropes.
