Ren Kizaki, a novelist who writes under the pen name Issei Naruse, has been confined to a wheelchair since a childhood accident that left him unable to use his legs. The trauma and physical change caused him to shut himself off from the outside world, leading him to live as a recluse in his large, isolated house to escape public scrutiny. His bitterness and bad temper have earned him a reputation for driving away all the caretakers hired to assist him.

The story begins to shift with the arrival of a new caretaker named Maki Rintarou. Unlike the others, Maki possesses a notable nonchalance and genuine benevolence that allows him to withstand Ren's hostility. Instead of being pushed away, Maki slowly and patiently chips away at the walls Ren has built around himself. His persistent and gentle approach gradually reaches the wounded novelist, eventually encouraging him to start enjoying life again. The narrative explores their developing relationship against the backdrop of disability, grief, and depression.
