Description
The story follows Shaleen, the Head Saint of a kingdom, who is revered by the people for her powerful supernatural abilities and is engaged to the crown prince. This entire prestigious identity, however, is a complete sham. Her true origin is that she was born in the red-light district to a prostitute and an illicit apothecary, then kidnapped and sold to the church. When her past is exposed by the second-ranked saint, Lulumiya, Shaleen is stripped of her title and engagement, falsely accused of debauchery, and eventually murdered by having her throat slit while imprisoned.
On the verge of death, she calls out to the god she has always considered her husband from her days in the temple. Her plea is answered by a beautiful, black-haired land deity named Kaya. He saves her life, but as a side effect of his healing, Shaleen's body transforms into that of a young girl, appearing around eight years old. Freed from the shackles of her fraudulent saintly life and her bind to the kingdom, Shaleen decides to leave. Kaya, a possessive god whose love for her is intense, declares he has no reason to protect a country that would use and discard his wife and chooses to follow her.
The central setting shifts from the royal capital's corrupt church and court to the wider world as the pair travels. The narrative follows Shaleen as she adapts to her new, younger body and experiences true freedom for the first time. Despite her rough, streetwise manner of speaking, she is fundamentally honest and straightforward, and she begins to carve out a new path for herself with her doting god by her side. Meanwhile, the kingdom she left behind begins to crumble after losing the divine protection she had unwittingly provided, setting up a revenge narrative against those who betrayed her.
Shaleen is the protagonist, a former head saint whose rough upbringing has given her a blunt, big-sisterly personality. The god, Kaya, is a serpent deity with an intense, almost overwhelming affection for Shaleen, prioritizing her safety and happiness above all else, including his duties as a god. Key antagonists include Lulumiya, the ambitious second-rank saint who exposes Shaleen, and the self-serving crown prince who readily discards her.
Notable narrative arcs, based on the structure of the original web novel, include the initial exile and transformation, their journey to Shaleen’s hometown where she learns about her father, and a tense confrontation with pursuers sent by the church. A significant storyline involves a vacation in the territory of a Margrave, leading to a political upheaval and a scheme to kill the god's consort. Ultimately, Shaleen and Kaya return to the royal capital for a final confrontation, where the false pretenses of the kingdom and the saint's replacements are shattered, culminating in a resolution where Shaleen finds her genuine self and her place beside her possessive divine husband.
