Description
Edo's largest red-light district, Yoshiwara, is a place where the feelings of the living and the dead swirl together. Ao, a prodigy prostitute, becomes lost and stumbles upon an unknown shrine. This shrine is a "village of shrines" situated between Ukiyo, the floating world of Yoshiwara, and Sakai, the borderland. It is a location that can only be reached by those who strongly seek the benefits of spiritual trials.
Only prostitutes burdened with beautiful and sad pasts visit this shrine. Alongside Yakumaru of Miyaji, the shrine's chief priest, and Myobu Usui no Kami, the guardian deity, Ao takes on the task of guiding and saving lost souls by unraveling their troubled lives and the regrets that bind them. The narrative explores the tragic backstories of these courtesans, with Ao and Yakumaru working to resolve the lingering emotional conflicts that trap the dead.
One notable arc involves the death of a central character named Komurasaki from the Miura-ya establishment. Even after her death, people remain captivated by her presence and memories. A male geisha who was in love with Komurasaki is tormented by regret for failing to save her, while a courtesan yearns for this grief-stricken male geisha. The resulting one-sided love creates a complex love triangle between a prostitute, a male geisha, and the memory of a dead woman that refuses to resolve neatly.
