Description
Seven year old Mido Rika is placed in Sunnybell Academy, a children's home. To the staff, the young girl initially appears innocent, but they soon sense a sinister shadow taking root within her. In truth, Rika was neglected while living in a single parent household, which ultimately led to her being placed in the home. The story is set within this children's home and follows the lives of children who, despite suffering from parental neglect and abuse, carry a complex love for their absent parents. The narrative aims to shed light on shocking and controversial societal problems surrounding child welfare, abandonment, and the foster care system. A key figure within the story is the head of the home, Tokugawa, who quietly observes the children and the troubles that unfold around them, his perspective serving as a crucial element in understanding their plights. The work is based on research and interviews, with the author, Tsuyoshi Oshikawa, modeling the character of the director on an old friend who is the third generation of his family to run an orphanage. The story is a seinen drama that chronicles the various incidents and complex emotional struggles that arise as children like Rika attempt to navigate their lives within the institutional system and reconcile their feelings toward the parents who failed them.
