Description
Touko Amemiya, a 25-year-old otaku working in the human resources department of a stationery company, has fallen in love with a real three-dimensional person for the first time. Her target is her handsome section chief, the 35-year-old Shuichirou Hasu. When she hears a rumor that he might be leaving the company, she finally gathers the courage to confess her feelings. To her shock, he turns her down. However, Amemiya quickly realizes Hasu has lied about his reasons for rejecting her. As she chases after him to confront him, he suddenly collapses, his breathing becoming rapid and labored.
This collapse reveals Hasu's life-threatening secret: he cannot be touched. Physical contact of any kind triggers a dangerous medical episode, forcing him to live a life completely devoid of touch. After the confession and collapse, a strange dynamic emerges. Hasu proposes a bold new direction for their relationship, asking, So won't you try something more exciting than sex with me? Despite the barrier that makes a normal physical relationship impossible, the two decide to move forward together, embarking on a pure, platonic, and yet simultaneously sexual romance that navigates the space between life and death.
The story follows Amemiya and Hasu as they develop their unconventional bond under the constant shadow of his condition. The series is set primarily within their modern Japanese workplace and the surrounding city, juxtaposing the ordinary pressures of office life with the extraordinary intimacy of a relationship built on a forced and desperate form of chastity. Amemiya, a self-described 2D otaku, finds herself learning about the complexities of a real, 3D love that cannot rely on physical reassurance. Hasu, who has likely lived in isolation due to his illness, must learn to trust another person with his vulnerability.
The narrative appears to be driven by the core tension of exploring how far a romance can go when the most basic form of connection is forbidden. It is a high-stakes gamble, a game of love where one wrong touch could have fatal consequences, forcing the two characters to find creative and purely emotional ways to express their growing feelings for one another. The manga concluded its serialization, with its fourth and final volume bringing the story of their precarious relationship to a close.
