Description
Two centuries after a great war that saw the rise of industry and the decline of the supernatural, the few remaining elves who fought alongside the spirits have been systematically hunted down. In this world where steam and steel rapidly replace ancient magic, Aharu travels across a war-scarred land as the last surviving elf. Accompanied by her loyal owl companion Glyph, she seeks out the forgotten spirits who once fought alongside her people, offering them one final chance to return to their own realm before they are lost forever. However, imperial forces that rose to power after the war are determined to see this final elf erased from history alongside the spirits, actively working to suppress any knowledge of the magical beings who helped end the conflict.

Aharu herself is a plucky and resilient protagonist defined by her mission to release the spirits still bound to the land or to humans who made contracts with them during the war. She possesses the unique ability to break these contracts, a skill that brings her into contact with a range of ghosts and magical entities trapped by the lingering effects of past violence. An early narrative arc focuses on Aharu breaking a contract between a ghost and his wife, who used a spirit pact to remain waiting for him after his death at war. This storyline explores how the conflict warped even the purest of motives, and concludes with the couple finally departing together. The narrative structure initially follows an episodic spirit of the week format, establishing a melancholy and gentle tone as Aharu mourns the loss of magic while acknowledging its decline as inevitable. This approach changes dramatically in a subsequent major arc, where the plot accelerates with the introduction of imperial military forces and spirit butchers who actively oppose Aharu. The story expands to encompass not merely quiet grief but also cycles of violence and a direct confrontation with an authoritarian regime seeking to rewrite history and erase entire cultures. Aharu gains a traveling companion who initially seems friendly but is ultimately revealed to be part of the larger opposing force working against her, establishing the primary source of conflict moving forward.
