Description
A baron’s daughter in name only, Laura Liddell is treated as a servant by her aunt and uncle, the current baron and his wife. After a lifetime of abuse and unreasonable demands, her circumstances change when she rescues a boy from kidnappers one night. This boy turns out to be connected to the Danford marquis family, giving Laura a chance to escape her situation as she is hired as a live-in maid. The vast Danford mansion is eerily empty, home to only the young and reclusive Marquis Cyrill, the enigmatic butler Freddie, and Laura herself. Life under the same roof as the notoriously people-hating marquis is strange but peaceful, a welcome change from her past. However, Laura soon discovers the real reason for the marquis’s seclusion: Cyrill suffers under a curse cast by a witch.
The story unfolds in the Lezant Kingdom, a setting divided between the glittering noble district and the rougher, more communal slums where Laura has found unexpected allies. The narrative centers on this unconventional household as Laura adjusts to her new life, learning to prepare meals and care for the estate, all while unravelling the mystery of Cyrill’s curse. An early arc focuses on Laura’s successful departure from her abusive relatives, followed by the delicate establishment of her new daily routine. As she and Cyrill grow closer, a deeper investigation into the curse begins, requiring them to venture into the slums for information and leading to a collaborative effort to find a cure. The plot combines themes of recovery and romance, following two wounded individuals who find solace in each other while confronting a magical threat.
