Description
In the aftermath of the family patriarch's death, the Nigorikawa family is left to manage their struggling bento shop, a business that none of them seem genuinely invested in keeping alive. The pressure of this failing enterprise falls on the mother and her four adult children, each of whom is grappling with their own personal crises that have little to do with the family legacy.
The protagonist is Sae, a married woman who has separated from her husband following his infidelity. Unlike traditional depictions of a spouse in distress, Sae begins her journey as a relatively independent and modern woman, determined to navigate her life on her own terms. Her path is complicated by the presence of multiple romantic interests, most notably a massage therapist carrying a haunted past who is involved in a complicated open marriage. Meanwhile, two of the siblings have never left home, and the youngest child, Hikari, is secretly hiding his homosexuality. As Sae works hard in her professional and personal life, the central theme emerges that despite her efforts, like the rest of the Nigorikawa family, she often has little to show for her struggles. The narrative follows these intertwined stories of personal dissatisfaction, hidden identities, and the slow dissolution of a family business that once served as their common ground.
