On the island of Nakiri in Nagasaki, a young girl named Naoko arrives to receive treatment for her asthma. There, she meets Yuusei, a boy who loves to run. One day, Naoko falls into the sea, and Yuusei's father dives in to save her. He succeeds in rescuing the girl but perishes in the process, an event that leaves both children deeply traumatized.

Six years later, Naoko and Yuusei cross paths again, this time in Tokyo. The boy who loved to run has grown into a brilliant competitive runner, but he remains haunted by his father's death.
