Description
Nagi Kitagawa is an art university student from the countryside who is hopelessly in love with his next-door neighbor, Yuu Yamasaki. Yuu is Nagi’s senior in the folk song club, and he possesses everything Nagi feels he lacks: good looks, a warm personality, and natural popularity. Nagi believes someone like him has no chance with someone like Yuu, so he keeps his feelings a secret. A recurring situation causes this wall to break down when, after club drinking parties, Nagi is tasked with taking the intoxicated Yuu back to his apartment. One night, a drunk Yuu pulls Nagi into an embrace and falls asleep, trapping Nagi in his arms. Nagi sneaks away the next morning, but this close encounter only deepens his longing.
The story is set primarily on and around the campus of an arts university in Tokyo, as well as in the adjacent apartments where the two main characters live. The atmosphere is a quiet, slice-of-life look at the slow and gentle blossoming of a mutual attraction. Despite his initial self-doubt, Nagi finds that his feelings might not be as one-sided as he believes, and the two eventually begin dating.
The narrative is divided into distinct emotional arcs. The first volume establishes the tension of an unrequited crush, focusing on Nagi's anxieties and Yuu's seemingly casual affection before the relationship is confirmed. The story then transitions into exploring the early stages of a new relationship. As a shy and inexperienced young man, Nagi navigates his first romance, while Yuu, who is more socially experienced but overwhelmed by his genuine feelings for Nagi, deliberately takes the physical side of their relationship at a slow pace.
Later arcs introduce more mature themes and external conflicts. When Nagi turns twenty, officially becoming an adult, he gains the confidence to plan a special gift for Yuu. He brings Yuu to his family’s traditional inn, formally introducing him to his parents as his boyfriend. However, the stability of their future is challenged by an upcoming graduation. As Yuu’s final year ends, Nagi worries about what will happen to their relationship when Yuu leaves the university and they are no longer neighbors. The story arcs revolve around Nagi overcoming his shyness to articulate his needs, Yuu balancing academic pressure with love, and both characters learning to trust in a future that may separate their daily lives.
