The Takatsuki family, once the lords of a castle, has maintained a centuries-old bond with the Inui family, a clan said to carry the blood of beasts (dogs) who served as their secret guardians. In the present day, this tradition continues: high school girl Takatsuki Kaori is never without her bodyguard, Inui Haruka, the third son of the Inui household. Kaori calls him Pochi, a dog-like nickname, after he coldly refused to become her friend when they first met five years earlier. Despite his distant attitude, Pochi is always there when Kaori falls into trouble—and trouble comes often.

Kaori lives a heavily sheltered life because of a unique and dangerous ability: she can heal any living creature, but doing so shortens her own lifespan. For this reason, her family and the Inui brothers keep her confined to a nearly princess-like existence, monitored and protected at all times. Kaori resents this lack of freedom and constantly tries to experience ordinary teenage life, from making friends to sneaking out of the mansion. Her main ally in these escapades is her spirited best friend, Sonohara (often called Sono-chan), while the Inui brothers—especially the eldest, Hayato, and the younger Hibiki—watch over her alongside Pochi.

Strange incidents begin to plague the Takatsuki household, culminating in the appearance of a mysterious entity known only as the Yellow Eyes. This malevolent force is linked to an ancient grudge and a hidden chapter of the “dog and princess” legend that binds the two families. As the Yellow Eyes attacks those close to Kaori, long-buried secrets come to light—including the true nature of Kaori’s healing power and the tragic history of the Inui bloodline.

Throughout its eight volumes, the series balances comedic slice-of-life moments (Kaori’s bumbling attempts at normalcy, the brothers’ overprotective antics) with escalating drama and danger. Key arcs include Kaori’s kidnapping, the temporary removal of Pochi as her bodyguard and the arrival of a stern replacement, the romantic jealousy sparked by Pochi’s ex-girlfriend, and the final confrontation with the Yellow Eyes.
