Manga
Description
Sora Utagawa, a young man who loves dogs and cats, leaves his hometown and takes a part-time job in Tokachi, Hokkaido, as a driver and assistant for a veterinarian. He expects to work with small animals, but the veterinarian he meets is Tasuku Mikai, an industrial animal clinical veterinarian who specializes in livestock such as cows and horses. The job is far from what Sora imagined: it is dirty, strenuous, and physically demanding, and he struggles to adapt to the harsh reality of farm work.

During an early consultation, Mikai tells a dairy farmer whose cow is seriously ill, "I can't cure it anymore." Sora is shocked by what seems like a cold dismissal, but he soon learns that Mikai's words are grounded in a deep concern for both the animals and the farmers who depend on them. The story follows Sora and Mikai as they travel across the northern landscape, treating sick and injured livestock while confronting the difficult choices that come with raising food-producing animals.

Volume one introduces several narrative arcs that illuminate the struggles of dairy farmers. A young man manages 35 cows alone and faces mounting pressure as more of his herd falls ill. An elderly couple runs a farm where many cows experience difficult births, testing their endurance and their bond with their animals. A young girl cannot come to terms with the necessity of slaughtering an injured cow, forcing Sora and Mikai to navigate the emotional side of livestock medicine. Through these cases, the manga portrays the realities of industrial animal clinical practice: the endless labor, the financial strain on small farms, and the veterinarians who serve as the last line of defense for the animals that sustain Japan's food supply.
