Description
Kayoko Kuroda enters high school with a single goal: to remain behind the scenes and help her classmates create their best memories. She throws herself into club activities and takes on any menial task, earning the nickname Kuroko after the black-clad stagehands who support a theatrical production without ever stepping into the spotlight. Her quiet, self-effacing routine is shattered when Rento Shishima, a breathtakingly handsome boy feared by the entire school as a dangerous devil, takes an interest in her. Shishima is rude, blunt, and universally avoided, yet he begins following Kayoko around after she accidentally catches his attention. He helps her with backstage work, briefly leading her to believe he might be kinder than his reputation suggests, but then declares he will make her the main character. This announcement throws Kayoko into a chaotic, unpredictable school life as Shishima relentlessly pulls her out of the shadows and into the center of attention.
The story is set in a contemporary Japanese high school and centers on the growing relationship between two opposite personalities. Kayoko is diligent, selfless, and content to remain invisible, while Shishima is theatrical, abrasive, and instinctively commands every room he enters. Despite his fierce exterior, Shishima reveals a softer, more attentive side only to Kayoko, following her around and showing a genuine fascination with her kindness. As the narrative progresses through episodes such as sports festivals and amusement park dates, Kayoko begins to see past Shishima's fearsome facade and develops romantic feelings for him. Their dynamic evolves from one of mutual bafflement into a tense, sweet push-and-pull as Kayoko must reconcile her desire to stay in the background with Shishima's insistence on pulling her forward.
The manga unfolds over eight chapters collected in two volumes. The opening arc establishes the central conflict: Kayoko's determination to remain a supporting player versus Shishima's vow to make her a protagonist. Subsequent arcs explore their growing intimacy through school events and everyday interactions, deepening the emotional stakes as Kayoko's feelings accelerate and Shishima's guarded nature begins to crack. The series concludes with the resolution of their relationship, asking whether a self-described Kuroko and a so-called devil can find common ground. The tone balances romantic comedy with genuine emotional warmth, focusing on how two people from opposite ends of the social spectrum learn to understand and trust each other.
