Description
When an ordinary high school girl, Kanae Onda, is introduced to a fighting game called Duel of Burn Blue by her boyfriend Yuuto, what begins as a casual pastime spirals into an all-consuming obsession. Over time, Kanae disengages from school and family, eventually dropping out and becoming unemployed. Her skill in the game grows rapidly, but so does her isolation; the very hobby that once offered escape now fuels a harsh, confrontational personality. After Yuuto grows tired of losing to her and the couple breaks up, Kanae plunges deeper into the virtual arena, her life reduced to a cycle of grinding matches and broken controllers.

The story unfolds in a cramped, tense domestic setting: Kanae lives with a timid, worried father and a stern grandmother who openly despises her gaming lifestyle. Her only social outlet comes through an online friend request from a player named Kaoru. Kaoru, a prim and academically pressured young woman from a strict household, represents everything Kanae has left behind. Their offline meetings at an arcade briefly rekindle Kanae’s humanity—she defends Kaoru from unwanted attention and even teaches some boys the finer points of the game. Yet the pressures of their respective families remain.

A turning point arrives when Kanae participates in a gaming tournament. Though the event itself is left off-screen, she returns with a modest gift-card prize to present to her father, a rare gesture of gratitude. Her grandmother, however, sees only a worthless token and smashes Kanae’s console in fury. In the violent confrontation that follows, Kanae lunges at her grandmother with a knife but is overpowered and thrown aside. Fleeing into the rain, Kanae receives a text from Kaoru inviting her to play again. For the first time, Kanae acknowledges the wreckage she has caused and resolves to quit gaming.

The series frames this descent and fragile recovery through a lens of psychological suspense, with the cover art hinting at even darker possibilities—blood splatters, a knife, a dragging of corpses—though the story itself remains grounded in the characters’ emotional turmoil rather than explicit horror. The manga is a stark, single-volume drama that focuses on the real weight of addiction, the loneliness of skill, and the thin line between a game and a life lost.
