Mutsumi is a high school girl who has never been able to express herself well, and over time she has given up on speaking altogether. Her quiet, isolated world is disrupted when a new transfer student, James Willard, is seated next to her. James is an American who only speaks English and cannot understand or be understood in Japanese. Despite the language barrier, the two begin to connect through small gestures and nonverbal communication, slowly bridging the gap between them.
